ANTHONY TENNISON SELECTED TO
AMERICAN FOOTBALL WORLDWIDE ELITE TEAM; WILL REPRESENT USA IN MATCHUP AGAINST
U19 ITALIAN NATIONAL TEAM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 5, 2016

VENTURA, CA – Anthony Tennison from Buena High School will be the only athlete from Ventura County to represent the United States as part of the American Football Worldwide ELITE team when they travel to Italy in March. Tennison, along with the rest of AFW ELITE will participate in an international contest against the U19 national team of Italy scheduled to take place in Milan on March 26, 2016.

Anthony is one of only two players from California. He was chosen by a search of the AFW ELITE coaching staff through information and recruiting films presented by NCSA (National Collegiate Scouting Association) to the AFW coaching staff. “Anthony is a dynamic, explosive runner with a uniquely powerful and speedy running style. We are convinced he will leave quite an impression on the Italian national U19 team,” stated Jim Barnes the Head Coach for the AFW ELITE team.

American Football Worldwide’s ELITE team comes from a true cross-section of the United States and represents every region of the country. Hailing from coast-to-coast, a record 20 different states are represented on the 31-man roster.

Football practices will largely take place at the start of the day with the remaining time invested visiting, learning about and experiencing the culture of one of the most fascinating and historically significant countries in western civilization. The team and tour party will travel from Rome in central Italy to the tip of Lake Como just north of Milan. During the week the players, who will be joined by some family members and fans, will tour many of the historical icons of Italy, including the Roman Coliseum and Forum, the piazzas of Rome, Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica, Sienna, Florence and Milan. Looking forward to the tour, Barnes commented, “Observing these young men grow from the unique education that only international travel can offer will once again be the most rewarding aspect of the tour. Each day will hold special life-expanding experiences for them.”

Intermixed with the immense educational value of the trip, the team will refine football skills by working to find common ground in terminology and football schemes as well as in putting together a formidable game plan for their Italian hosts. “Meeting one another for the first time and installing a well-coordinated game plan in all phases of football in less than a week will be a formidable challenge,” said AFW Head Coach Jim Barnes. “However, from the research we have done our staff is excited about the potential for this team.

This game is the fourth annual clash between AFW ELITE and American football teams in Europe. In March of 2013 AFW ELITE traveled to Paris and after a week of practicing and touring in the “City of Lights”, Versailles and D-Day sights in Normandy they defeated France’s U19 national team 19-0. Les Blues had recently finished sixth in the most recent U19 World Championships of American Football sponsored by IFAF, the International Federation of American Football. In March of 2014 AFW ELITE returned to France for a similar educational and cultural tour and executed very well in defeating the defending national champion U19 team of France, the Paris Flash, 50-0. Last year AFW ELITE accepted the invitation of the Italian Federation of American Football earning a victory over the Italian national U19 team in April of 2015.

Anthony is a warm, respectful and caring young man. He is a loved and respected individual, admired by friends, fans and his community. His skills and love for the game continuously draws more support by those who watch him play.
In 2007, Tennison began playing football as a fourth grader for the Golden Empire Youth Football League in Bakersfield, CA. He continued playing through his entire middle school years. Despite suffering a burst appendix and a bout with sepsis during football in the eighth grade, Anthony worked very hard to get back on the field the next season. His hard work paid off his freshman year when he was specifically invited to participate as one of the top 300 athletes in the entire nation at the Proving Ground National Combine in Carson, CA. Tennison continued to shine at Frontier High School in Bakersfield during his freshman and sophomore years, receiving awards for MVP and leadership skills. In 2014, his family relocated to Ventura, CA where Anthony became a varsity Buena Bulldog. His team had two very successful years, achieving opportunities in the playoffs. This past fall Tennison played running back, outside-linebacker and special teams for kick-off and punt return at Buena.
A special message from his head coach, Tim Gutierrez, "Anthony exemplifies the ideals Buena High School Football strives to achieve. His commitment & dedication has had an immense impact on those around him. He leads by example and his great attitude will be sorely missed. He will represent Buena High School and The United States with pride & passion."
