Children's Legacy Center

Take a stand against child abuse and sex trafficking!

Shasta County and the surrounding counties have some of the highest rates of child abuse in our state.

The Children's Legacy Center (CLC) will be a center for victims of child abuse and sex trafficking located in Redding, CA. It will serve all of the children in the North-state, not just Shasta County.

Children will be brought to the CLC for a forensic interview, medical/sexual assault exam, counseling services, advocate services, legal services, and much more.

If foster care placement is needed, the CLC will have an Emergency Assessment Center. This building will feel like a home. The child will receive a full medical, mental health, and dental evaluation while children’s services finds a foster home that is a good match for the child’s needs.

The goal of the CLC is not just prosecution, it's about healing and restoration of the child and his/her non-offending family members. It's about breaking the cycle of abuse and helping that child grow up to become a healthy and productive member of our society.

As of today, when child abuse is reported, the child may be interviewed by 6-11 different people across multiple agencies, including Law Enforcement, Children's Services (AKA CPS), Medical, District Attorney, Mental Health, Advocate Services, etc.

I know this because I'm the Medical Provider involved in that process.

The child is literally transported from one facility to the other, giving the same interview over and over again.

Can you imagine going through this? Picture a 7 year old retelling the memory of how she was sexually assaulted to 6-11 different strangers, all working towards the same goal. It only makes sense they all work together in the same facility and collaborate.

Under the new system, children will be interviewed by one person while members from the other agencies are watching in a separate room. Those individuals will be able to pitch questions to the interviewer through sophisticated audio/video equipment. This greatly reduces trauma to the child, builds a stronger case, decreases time to prosecution, and gets the child connected with the mental health, medical, legal, advocacy, and other services he/she needs.

Unless you've been a victim of abuse, or work in the field, it is hard for most people to understand how prevalent this problem is in the North-state and how important the CLC is to our community. As a child abuse pediatrician working on the front lines, I see this every day and unfortunately, it is only getting worse.

We have already started working out of our temporary facility and plan to work our way up towards purchasing a building. Every dollar counts and no donation is too small!!

The CLC is a 501c3 nonprofit that will include 2 interview rooms, 2 viewing rooms, medical exam room, therapy room, offices for the different agencies, and what makes our CLC different from other counties, an Emergency Assessment Center as mentioned above.

We are asking for $70,000 in the early phase but will need more funds as things progress.
Please donate today! All (100%) of the donations go towards funding the development of the CLC.

Please stand up and fight child abuse and sex trafficking in the north state!
