Down to Earth: Iceland Expedition

Donation protected

Dear Friends,

This April, Eight incredible individuals will be traveling to Iceland to begin filming a series of human-powered expeditions dedicated to education and climate change awareness.  We will be sailing, sea kayaking, and skiing in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in Iceland beginning April 22nd thru May 3. This soulful and intentional adventure was brought to life by Michaela Precourt, a first grade teacher at a Waldorf school and Northwest Outward Bound Instructor.

The concept of “Down to Earth” was developed on many skin tracks around the world(the name was directly founded by Marty Schaffer).  Michaela Precourt is embarking on a 5 year journey to bring awareness to her students and community about the ever changing effect of climate change on the Arctic. This year she was forutnate to find people that were interested in telling the first story.  Each member of the expedition connects to the wilderness in a meaningful way and seeks to answer, "How can I use my voice to protect, educate, and continue to enjoy these wonderful, snowy environments?"  The variety of backgrounds, representing teachers, guides, professional athletes and cinematographers, make this a significant trip affording a multi-faceted view and a chance to see that protecting and educating about the environment is important to all types of people with all types of perspectives. Anyone, all of us, can work hard to make a difference to the wild environment.

A single blanket has many individual threads, without those threads there is no blanket, no coverage. We are weaving many ideas into this single trip to hopefully impact communities all over. To give them tools and ideas of how to become involved in their communities. The trip is broken down into 5 sections.

The first section is education. Michaela Precourt is a teacher at the Waldorf School of Bend and over the next few months she is working with her fellow faculty to create curriculum for all the students that aligns with the expedition. Each class is going to have an opportunity to interact with the team and ask questions that align with their curriculum.  We will also be sending out gps coordinates, pictures, and data we will be collecting, so the children can track our experience.

The second section is Food. The team will attempt to only eat food grown within 100 miles of Iceland. We will be working with local farmers to create a menu that is full of nutritious food. We will be hopefully working with farmers that have discovered how to grow fruits and veggies during the winter so to have a balanced diet.

The third section is Awareness: We hope to fundraise money for POW (protect our winters) and one other organization. Both organizations are trying to reduce carbon in the atmosphere, bring awareness and education to large corporate organizations and then also smaller companies.  These two organizations we feel align with the idea that it is not about doing less and staying in a padded room. It is about how we continue to progress in a more authentic and intentional way that takes into account the environment, us, and the health of the world around us.
The way we are trying to fundraise money is to have classes and people to donate $11 dollars to gain access to tracking our expedition, curriculum, and live feed. That money will instantly be split into the two organizations. Schools are of course allowed to donate more, it is actually encouraged to make this a bigger awarenesses at schools and see if they want to fundraise more money to donate.

The fourth Section is Carbon Footprint. During this trip we will be trying to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible. During this sailing expedition we will be using kayaks, row boats, and paddle boards as a means of the approach to the land. Our hope is to design a “Down to Earth” app that calculates anyone's carbon footprint.

We have begun this campaign to ask for your help  supporting our way to fulfill a dream.  Any amount of money you so generously give will go towards helping Taylor Bones get to Iceland, help support the people documenting the experience, and finally we will start fundraising money towards an organization that reduces carbon in the atmosphere.  Life certainly has its ups and downs but they should never get in the way of our dreams of who we wish to become and what we wish to accomplish in this beautiful crazy life. I invite you to join us on this adventure.

If you are able to donate money to our “Go Fund Me” we want to show our appreciation with thank you's.
