Friends of Doug

Within days, everything changed.

It was spring in Minnesota, and after a long winter, signs of life were appearing.  Doug's life was great.  Married, a good job, two kids in college, and friends.

But then something didn't feel quite right.  And by the next day he was sure of it.  And the next day, the doctors confirmed it.

In May, Doug Roden was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome.  Within hours he went from having an active, healthy life to the intensive care unit.  The disease attacked his chest wall, causing respiratory failure, and paralysis of the face, neck, and diaphragm.  He couldn't move his body.  Soon he could only breathe with a tracheotomy and a respirator.  He had to be fed through a tube through his stomach wall.

The good news is, Doug is going to get better.  Under the care of a great medical team in the ICU for 31 days, and then 32 more in recovery, Doug was able to return home to his family.  But now he waits.  There's no set time frame for how long this will take.  He just has to wait patiently for the disease to reverse itself.

Waiting isn't easy for a guy like Doug.  He spent 4 years in the Navy from 1985 to 1989, and then spent 25 years in the Air Force reserve as part of the 934th Airlift Wing, being deployed to the Middle East twice during his career. As an active dad and husband, sitting on the sidelines isn't what he's used to.

And while he waits, the expenses mount.  No matter how good your insurance, a sudden and severe illness like this is impossible for anyone to manage alone.

That's why we are reaching out to Doug's friends, family, co-workers, fellow service members, and community members.  If you know Doug, or a guy like Doug, you know he'd do the same for us.  Please give what you can to help Doug and his family defray the expenses that are piling up.  Let's all pitch in, and get behind a guy that has done so much for the people in his life. Let's make sure that while he fights back against this disease, he doesn't have to worry about money, he just has to keep fighting to get back to healthy, get back to work, and get back to normal.  He'd do it for you.
