Laminar Racing - World Finals

Donation protected
We're four students from Bert Church High School in Airdrie competing in the world’s largest S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) competition, F1 in Schools. Teams design, create, and build a miniature CO2 powered balsa wood car that races down a 20m track in just over one second. In addition to the speed of their car, teams are evaluated on a 20 page portfolio, a 10 minute verbal presentation, and a display set up by the team. Each year over 15,000 teams compete across 44 nations.

Laminar Racing was started in September 2014 and consists of Joel Merrifield, Laidan Besler, Christopher Le Cheminant, and Nate Logan. This is the first team to compete from Calgary or its surrounding area. Being the only team in Alberta for the 2015 season, Laminar Racing advanced straight to the US/Canada National Finals at the Michigan International Speedway.

We raised over $10,000 in order to compete at the National Finals. This money has been primarily raised through sponsorship. Companies are able to get their logo on our car, website, social media, uniforms, portfolio, and pit display in exchange for monetary or in-kind support of the team.

In May, at the North American Finals, the team won the Canadian National Championship! This title was presented alongside the prestigious award of Best Engineered Car. Though our car was not the fastest at the event, the judges recognized our engineering as the best among both the Canadian and American teams. Because of our top 3 finish, Laminar Racing has been invited to the 2015 World Finals event which takes place at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore from September 11th to September 17th.

We are very proud of achieving this result in our first year of competition; we have beaten many teams with significantly more resources and experience. We believe that this result demonstrates what Laminar Racing is capable of, and we hope to deliver competitive results at the world level.  We have learned a huge amount from the competition and we are already planning major changes to both the car and the team in preparations for the World Finals.

Competing in the World Finals means that we have a tremendous amount of work ahead. The event is highly competitive, with teams from over 40 nations and expert judges from various fields. The team now has the opportunity to compete for the grand prize of a 1.5 million dollar scholarship to attend City University in London for Motorsports Engineering.

Successfully competing in the World Finals will require a large budget for the team. A budget of $65,000 is necessary to cover the costs of hotels, flights, food, registration fees, marketing, and production of the car. Our goal is to raise at least $5,000 of the necessary $65,000 through individual donors on GoFundMe. We hope that your donations will enable us to take part in this amazing opportunity. For donations over $1,500 and if you're interested in a tax reciept, please contact Laidan Besler ([email redacted]) or visit LaminarRacing.com.
