Story County Freedom Rock Memorial

The "Story County Freedom Rock " is a Veterans Memorial in Maxwell, Iowa.  It is part of the "Freedom Rock Tour. "  Our mission is to create a permanent memorial to honor all of the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces.

The memorial has been constructed entirely with volunteer labor.  Hundreds and hundreds of volunteer hours. The costs to date  have been for material only

including  landscape blocks, custom pavers, benches, flag poles & flags, lighting, etc... 

Much material has been donated as well including the rock, cement, landscape blocks for engraving the names of those killed in action, and the pillars preserved from the original Story County Courthouse.

Although much has been done, there is still a long way to go.  In the coming weeks mural artist Ray "Bubba" Sorenson will be painting an inspiring mural on the rock.

In addition, in the near term there will be improvements to the road in front of the memorial including curb and gutter, new sidewalks, and parking spaces.

Planned additions to the memorial area include a new shelter in the middle section of the monument area supported by the historic columns of the original Story County Ciurthouse in Nevada,, picnic tables, a kiosk featuring an electronic display about the memorial, picnic tables,  pavers  and concrete throughout the memorial area and the placement of granite memorial benches.

On the South end of the memorial area we hope to acquire a tank from the army to put on display.

Once the tank is placed, construction of the final wall in th East side will take place along with the official signage.

In order to accomplish these ambitious plans we have set a fundraising goal of $25,000 to cover the cost of materials.  All labor has been, and will continue to be, provided on a volunteer basis as a labor of love, honor, and respect to those who served our country.
