At age 17, Chrissy Benedyk was diagnosed with CML (Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia). CML, caused by an abnormal chromosome, originates in the bone marrow, and over time spreads to the blood and other organs in the body. CML can change from slow progressing to a rapidly growing acute (life -threatening)form of leukemia at any time.
It took 2 years for the doctors to accuratly diagnose Chrissy. During this 2 years she suffured from seizures dizziness and severe fatique while being repeatedly dismissed. Because CML accounts for less than 3% of all pediatric cancers. It is almost unheard of in children. The average age of diagnosis is 67 years old! Diagnosed at such a young age Chrissy will require oral chemotherpy for THE REST OF HER LIFE! Treatment may also include radiation, bone marrow or stem cell transplant, immunotherapy and biologic treatment with inferferon, depending on this cancer's ability to change its phase at any time. Currently Chrissy is in the Chronic phase but relaspe or accelerated, aggressive acute CML can attack at any time. Imagine the stress, anxiety and emotional turmoil this can have on a girl so young.
There is no cure or remissionfor Chrissy and long term treatment for CML has devestating effects on health and quality of life. Side effectsof CML treatment are known to cause decline in aspects of physical,emotional and psychological wellbeing. Chrissy currently struggles with debilitating fatique and cannot get through any day without rest. She also endures Grand Mal seizures activity. Depression,PTSD,Anxiety and Panic attacks. Chrissy's devasating reality include not knowing what her future holds and missing out on social events, losing friends and never knowing what it's like to experience a normal teenage life.
Donna, Chrissy's mom is a single mother .There is only one income in this household. The medical expenses for treatment, co-pays for multiple visits with specialists, home care for central line care and high out of pocket costs for prescription coverage/insurance premiums has caused an overwhelming financial strain, stress and burden on Donna's ability to keep up with all bills including mortagage. Donna and Chrissy are currently in danger of losing their home. Donna is trying everything to avoid foreclosure while fighting to keep her daughter alive, all at the same time.
We are reaching out to you to help remove some of this burden. Help is desperately needed to lessen the worry of the possibility of losing their home and being able to continue to pay for treatment. More attention is needed on quality of life and managing treatment side effects to ensure she remains strong enough to keep fighting this disease. She is only 19 years old
No mom should ever have to watch their child struggle and fight to survive cancer so helplessly, and to have the added distress of possibly losing their home due to medical costs associated with her child's treatment. This mom will be fighting alongside her daughter for the rest of her life. Together we can ease some of the financial struggle and make the unbearable weight a little lighter.
