Sensory Room for Children w/Autism

Donation protected
Everyone undoubtedly knows the financial challenges faced by our schools.  At Thomas E. Weightman Middle School, we have a unique demographic that is currently significantly underfunded.  In addition to the traditional basic education services provided, we also provide educational services to special education students that have significant learning difficulties.  Many of these students are non-verbal and lack the language skills to express their needs and desires.  Our students desperately need a room that is safe for them to engage their senses and help them learn to interact with the world around them.  In order to meet this need, we want to design a Sensory Room that will allow students to build their confidence and abilities.  The safe environment will allow their teacher, therapist or caregiver to see what calms them, rouses them and what they like or don’t like.

Our efforts to implement a sensory room can’t take effect unless we have the support of all who have a heart for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. That's where the online community comes in.

I’m writing to ask you for your financial support to help us help our students.  Your donation will directly support the purchase of the needed sensory items for our room at Weightman Middle School in Wesley Chapel, Florida. In the room design, we need to include a variety of items with vestibular input (items that allow users to spin, swing or hang), visual input and lighting, olfactory (smell), proprioception (items that allow the user to be squished or hugged), tactile, touch, feel, and auditory output.  Our vision is that each class of student will go in and participate in activities that will encourage social interaction and then students will go to choice areas in the room to engage in activities that meet their needs.  The class sizes for students with developmental disabilities are significantly smaller than traditional class sizes.  We would like to design the room for a class of 15.  Due to the specialized disability equipment necessary to ensure student safety, it will cost approximately $35,000 to complete the room.  Our goal is to open the room as soon as we meet our goal and with your help, we can make this goal a reality for our precious students with special needs.
