Help for Mittens

Donation protected
This is Mittens. She lives with us, Rob and Julia,  along with Missy, her mum, her sisters Mousecow and Scampi-von-Monkeyface and uncle Pixel.
This is her, on the left, with her sister Mousecow.

Her job is to be fluffy (which she does *with distinction*) and to keep Julia company while I'm at work, which she does by sitting on her lap(top). Julia has terminal cancer, and is housebound, unable to work, so the cats are a great comfort to her while I'm at work, and a comfort to me when I'm home, even if they add to the housework I need to do alongside working full time.

The fluff...oh, the fluff...

We never intended to have so many cats but we rescued Missy one rainy winter night and she blessed us with kittens shortly after. Homes were found for all of them but we kept Mittens, Mousecow and Scampi, had them all fixed and got used to buying catfood and litter in bulk.

Mittens definitely prefers being indoors, outside is filled with all sorts of scary monsters as far as she's concerned.

Coping with Julia's cancer has put a huge strain on our finances but we can just about cover those costs, and the joy they bring us more than repays us that outlay. Unfortunately, we've not been able to afford insurance for them and this is why I'm having to type this, much as I'd rather not do so.

Today, Mittens tripped me up at the top of the stairs. I fell down the entire flight, but got away with just some bruises, grazes and some broken picture frames. Sadly, according to the vet, she has a fractured tarsus bone (ankle, basically) and a fractured pelvis (which, in his words, is 'particularly nasty', being right on the joint itself) He's told us she'll need specialist surgery from Langfords in Bristol, which will be between three and six thousand pounds. Just the emergency (Sunday) appointment, painkillers and two scans have cost us four hundred pounds already and we have no way of paying a bill of three thousand pounds, let alone six. We'd hoped it was just dislocated and we could get away with a bill under a thousand, which would wipe us out but be just about manageable. Obviously, we're not that lucky. (If we were, I'd have fractured MY pelvis and Mittens would just have bruises.)

Normally, Julia and I wouldn't *dream* of asking people for money like this, but several friends on Twitter have asked me to set this up so they can help. So here we are, asking if you can help us raise money so Mittens can have an operation, instead of the alternative that I don;t want to think about, let alone type. But that option is pretty much all we can afford at present. Anything you can spare means we have more options open to us, up to the (frankly horrifying) six thousand pounds for the recommended surgery. She is currently at the vets, on painkillers,  so not in pain at the moment, but we need to let the vet know tomorrow what treatment we can afford. The sooner we can give an answer, the sooner she can be back home with us and her siblings. Obviously, they're currently wondering where she is and we're worried sick, worried both for her and what we're going to do.

All we can offer in return is our thanks, these pictures here (and on Twitter) and a playlist of videos I uploaded to Youtube when she and her siblings were kittens -
