Hui O Wa’a Kaulua is committed to developing an conducting model educational programs using voyaging to excite and challenge students and their communities to learn about, respect, and care for the natural and social environment. It is our vision to have a healthy, productive, safe Hawai’i and planet Earth.
We are voyagers. Our ancestors came from across the Pacific Ocean on a double-hull voyaging canoe and settled to these islands we now call home. On a canoe, they were able to sustain themselves for weeks at a time, in the middle of the ocean. They understood that everyone on the canoe had a job to do and they understood the art of “not over stepping”; you tend to your job and did not tell others how to do theirs. Respect was the key to a peaceful, functioning environment. They took care of one another and respected each other. No pilikia (no trouble). They brought these values to their new home, the hoe we now call Hawai’i. He wa’a he moke, he moku he wa’a; the canoe is an island, the island is a canoe. This is a saying that we use. We take care of each other on the island the way we take care of each other on a canoe voyage. These are the values we have learned as Hawaiians. These are the values we teach others as Voyagers.
In 1975, Hui O Wa’a Kaulua was formed on Maui to support the construction of a wa’a Kaulua (double hull canoe). Mo’olele is a 42 foot wa’a Kaulua with a traditional crab claw sail. She was built on Maui and has voyaged to the islands of Hawai’I, Lana’I, Molokai, Kaho’olawe, and Oahu. She has been our floating classroom for several decades.
On July 11, 2014, the launch of Mo’okiha O Pi’ilani took place at Mala Wharf, in Lahaina. The 62 foot wa’a Kaulua is our trans-oceanic voyaging canoes. This wa'a has bee to all the major islands from Hawai'i Island to Kaua'i, including Kaho'olawe. It currently serves as a floating classroom to students on Maui, Lanai, and Molokai. It is our goal to work with all high schools in Maui Nui and start Jr. Voyaging Clubs with in the high schools.
The funds raised will assist with:
Dry Dock of Mo'olele: It is our goal to complete the renovation and refurbish of Mo'olele so that we always have a wa'a in the water that the students can learn and train on. This wa'a must be in the water by the end of October so that we can drk dock Mo'okiha O Pi'ilani for much needed repairs. Mo'olele needs adjustments made to new iakos, reconstruction of seats, new canvas, and kaula for lashing. Estimated cost to finish is $10k
Dry Dock of Mo'okiha O Pi'ilani: This wa'a has continuously sailed across the Hawaiian Island chain since her launch in 2014. The wear and tear on the canoe is very apparent and is now in much need for dry dock. There is rotting of the wood that needs to be replaced. We also new new kaulua to rerig and replace lines for sailing. We have had many problems with the current engine, which needs to be replaced. Also three years in the sun has weathered and ripped our canvas for the sleeping quarters. Estimated cost to finish is $30k
Insurance: In order to keep stay with our mission of education to the students and people of Maui Nui, we are required to carry a $5million insurance policy. This insurance policy for our vessels and operation cost us $18k for six months. We are aking assistance to stay compliant with our insurance.
Cultural & Learning Center: Although we are rent free for our gifted Cultural & Learing Center in Waikapu, much renovations need to be done in order for us to operate out of this area. We plan to have a visiting center and classroom for students, crew members, and visitors to take part in. The classroom will also be offered to other cultural non-profit arts to share and teach the culture and art of Hawaii. This location needs rewiring for electrical, patching of canvas, new air conditioning units and major clean-up. The estimated repairs are $25k
Escort Boat: Each time we take students out to sail, an escort boat is required. Currently, we outsource our escort boat. The escort boat fees are $1k a day and many of our sails require us to be out on the ocean for two or more days. Since we currently have certified boat captains on our crew, it is best that we purchase our own escort boat. The cost to purchase our own boat is $50k
