Ever since learning about the fatal maternal mortality rates for Black women in America, I have been restless. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention , African-American, Native American and Alaska Native women are about three times more likely to die from causes related to pregnancy, compared to white women in the United States. The fact is: too many women are dying largely preventable deaths associated with their pregnancy. And racial bias within the healthcare system is contributing to the high numbers of pregnancy related deaths and complications among minority women.
Earlier this month, I decided that my silence was enough, and with community support, I was able to enroll in a birth doula program. I took part in a birth doula training at Cornerstone in San Francisco: a Culturally Diverse Birthkeeper Training for POC Birthworkers.
This fall, I will be working as a volunteer doula in Durham, NC. I will be working with Black, Indigenous, People of Color, queer, trans, gender nonconforming & low-income families. And I need a little help getting the things for my doula bag to support them through the birthing process — things many of them will be unlikely to afford.
Can you help? Please consider giving. Your support means the world.
