Fort McMurray Wildfire Relief Fund
With wildfires raging and the entire community of Fort McMurray, Alta., now evacuated, the Prairie city is in dire need of support.
Nationally, the Red Cross has put out a call for cash donations to help purchase food, medicine and other necessities for the tens of thousands of Fort McMurray residents affected by this disaster.
Sudbury.com and Huntington University want to leverage our ability to spread the word in Greater Sudbury by pitching in to help — community to community. This isn’t about headlines, folks — this is about helping fellow human beings, fellow Canadians, who really need our assistance right now.
We’ve created a GoFundMe campaign today with a goal to raise $15,000 for Fort McMurray. Whether we reach that goal or not, we’ll be sending whatever amount we can through the Red Cross to Fort Mac.
Our two organizations have kicked off the campaign by donating $2,000. You can visit the campaign page here.
Kevin McCormick, president and vice-chancellor of Huntington University, told Sudbury.com this morning that helping a neighbour in need is what community is all about.
"Huntington University has a long history of community engagement and outreach which is not limited to our local region,” McCormick said. “As we watch the devastation taking place in Fort McMurray, we are reminded how important it is to respond to the needs of other communities with care and compassion."
“Greater Sudbury might be a long way from Fort McMurray, Alta., but we know the generosity of Sudburians isn’t limited by distance,” said Sudbury.com publisher, Abbas Homayed. “Community is community, regardless of where it is, and we want to do whatever we can to help provide some relief to the thousands of our fellow Canadians impacted by this devastating wildfire.”
