22 Portrait Project

I'm Debs.....and my sister, Hollis, suffers from PTSD and various other invisible wounds of service. This is a struggle that we share....her in her fight to get well, and me in my fight to keep her from becoming a statistic.
A statistic that is well known in the Veteran community. 22. That is the number of Military Members that take their life every day. A number that shouldn't exist, but does.

Back in 2013, Hollis finally made the decision that her life was worth fighting for. So, together we began the journey towards healing, knowing there would be consequences. But we had no idea the ride this would take us on. Throughout the journey, throughout the endless appointments and tests, she just sounded more and more defeated.

It wasn't until last year, though, that I finally heard the fight come back in her voice. "This fight, this struggle, is for a reason. We HAVE to do something about it", she would say to me. Thus, the 22 Portrait Project was born. And from there it's grown into a pressing desire to tell her story. To give others courage to tell theirs.

One goal with this Project and Campaign to have enough pictures, stories and support to have a book, and a traveling gallery show. Crazy, yes. But what is a dream if it isn't crazy?? But, even more than that...I would like to raise the money so that Hollis can tell her story. Travel to the people who want her to do so. Because I believe that she is a voice that can finally bring these terrible stories out of the shadows.

And one thing I've told her from the beginning....I will do ANYTHING to help her. And, when she speaks about this project, the light comes back into her eyes, and the determination I've come to know and love from her, comes back. She's still working on getting better, but she's come so far in the last 2 years. We both have. Because, this struggle isn't fought alone.
