Toronto Trip

ASLA - MN Student Chapter is trying to raise money for a trip to Toronto, Ontario to visit their amazing new parks along the waterfront of Lake Ontario. We have been doing several fundraising events to be able to take advantage of this amazing opportunity, and these have included doing multiple bake sales as well as potlucks. However, we still need $1,000 to reach our ultimate goal of $3,200. We are trying to raise enough money for 12 students/group members to be able to go on this trip and the money raised will provide transportation, lodging, and 1 meal per day. Please help us anyway that you can, anything helps!
This trip will combine on-site & firm visits, with student research to study how Toronto has approached Landscape Design. Toronto and Minneapolis have many environmental and cultural factors in common, and our itinerary will focus on riverfront revitalization as well as design tactics for former industrial cold climate sites. Many of Toronto's public parks are award winning designs, such as Sugar Beach and Spadina Wave Deck, and serve as excellent examples of design tactics relevant to Minneapolis. Students will be responsible for preemptively researching a site and sharing the information with fellow students, in a collaborative student taught classroom environment.
This trip provides an opportunity for students to meet with Landscape Architecture professionals and visit realized landscape projects in a city comparable to Minneapolis, yet in a different country. These hands-on experiences will allow students to learn from others in the field and experience a wide variety of projects completed by professional firms. Through site visits and discussions, students will develop a deeper understanding of the Landscape Architecture field, broaden their range of thought and design ideas, and be able to translate the experiences into future work.
Visiting a different city in a different country diversifies students' backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge base. Connecting with other students and professionals in the field in Toronto will provide a platform to share ideas, thoughts, and experiences across cultures. The trip is open to any Landscape Architecture student, and those who attend will return to school and share what they have learned with their peers.
Students will be able to use what they have learned during the trip in their future designs, both in school and in their future careers. Toronto boasts many important and forward-thinking landscape projects that will inspire student creativity and design. Visits with the ASLA Student Chapter at the University of Toronto and professional firms in the city will allow all groups to share experiences and knowledge with each other, benefiting both communities.
