Hello everyone,
I am a 24 year old black woman, the daughter of two refugees from Somalia who never finished their education due to Civil War. I am the first person in my family to go to university and it has been such an incredible experience so far.
It pains me to ask but I need help paying off the tuition amount that I owe from this past academic year. This is the last option that I have. If I cannot pay off this amount, I will not be able to continue my education. I hope desperately to be able to finish my degree.
This past academic year was a difficult one for me because of the adversities I faced due to poor physical health as well as my deteriorating mental health. While I managed to finish the first semester, I had to take the rest of the academic year off to focus on recovering. I am suffering from disordered eating and anxiety. Despite how much I loved being in school, I needed to take a few months off to recover or I knew I wouldn’t be able to survive.
Student Finance has not been able to fund my tuition fee of £3000 for the one semester that I studied this year. Unfortunately I didn't find out until after I finished the semester. The university has asked me to pay that money out of my own pocket. Normally, this would never be a problem if I was able to work. However due to my poor physical health this is no longer an option. I have tried to find part-time jobs in the last few months and only ended up finding one. But I was not able to continue working in that position due to my condition growing worse. Nor have I been able to take out any loans due to my unemployment status and subsequent inability to make regular loan payments.
I have one final year standing in-between me and my diploma. Student financial aid will fund my remaining year of school. However, this is contingent on me enrolling this semester. I cannot enroll this semester without paying off my past due tuition. I have already paid £680 of the tuition that I owe but I won't be able to enroll without paying the remaining £2320.
Enrollment is within the next week and I only have until then to raise this money. Nobody around me can afford to help me out and I've tried to exhaust every other avenue possible to no avail. This is why I have created this campaign so close to deadline. I was hoping to find another way by now and I have been too proud to publicly ask for help. However, my education is more important than my pride.
I am not able to share my real name, picture or more details of the university that I go to due to fear for my safety. Some in my community are not understanding of mental health issues and stigmatize/shun those who have them. There are women in my community who have been subjected to violence for less. I regret not being able to give more details of myself, but having this campaign linked back to me could put me at risk. I hope you understand the difficult position that I am in and the urgency of my need. Know that your money will be going to fund my past tuition balance and to nothing else.
Coming from a low-income single parent household, I've had to work twice as harder than my peers to get to university to begin with. My goal is to receive my BA and hopefully go on to do a Masters and a PhD. I wish nothing more than to go become a professor in my field and educate the next generation.
I can't believe that I have made it this far in my academic career and I refuse to let poor health and unfortunate financial circumstances serve as a roadblock to getting my degree. Students from marginalized backgrounds often do not have the privilege or safety net to remain in school when crisis strikes.
I would love nothing more than to graduate with my classmates this academic year. Please donate whatever you can. Every penny can help me towards my goal. Even if you can't donate, please share with your friends and on your social media so that I may have a chance of meeting this deadline. I am extremely grateful for your love and support.
