New Discoveries at Woodrow Ruin

Donation protected
Hello everybody!

My name is Jakob Sedig, and I am a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I have been doing archaeology in the U.S. Southwest since 2006. For the last two years, I have conducted research in the Mimbres region of southwest New Mexico, at a site named Woodrow Ruin. I am starting this Crowdfunding campaign to help fund my last summer of exciting research at Woodrow Ruin.

Woodrow Ruin is a large archaeological site that was occupied from at least [phone redacted] AD. Prior to my work at Woodrow, there had been no professional archaeological research at the site, which makes my research a very unique experience. My research at Woodrow has two primary components. The first is the examination of social, demographic, and environmental transitions that occurred between [phone redacted] AD. The second is a broader examination of the site. How did occupation change through time? How is it similar or different to other Mimbres sites? How many people lived there? My research at the site over the last two years has begun to answer these questions. However, I plan to return to the site one last time this summer to gather more data, and me and my site crew are very positive about what we will uncover.

Up to this point, many institutions have generously provided funding for my research. Thanks to the University of Colorado Museum, Colorado Archaeological Society, Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society, the University of Colorado Graduate School, the University of Colorado Center to Advance Research and Teaching in the Social Sciences, and the National Science Foundation for funding my research up to this point.
This year, however, granting agencies that provide funding for social studies or humanities research have been hard hit by sequestration, and few have been able to provide funding for my work at Woodrow, although they would like to. This is what led me to decide to start a Crowdfunding campaign.

One of my ongoing goals is to incorporate the public into my archaeological research in any way I can, and I feel that this campaign is a great step in that direction. I feel that the public has a love and fascination with archaeology. Whenever I meet someone new and tell them what I do, they often light up, have many questions, and seem truly interested in my work. However, far too often archaeologists fail to incorporate, or even inform the public, on what we've discovered. This Crowdfunding campaign will allow me to better involve the public in my research and engage the community in my work that I feel so passionate about.

Any money generously donated will be used to complete my research at Woodrow Ruin. But what exactly will your money be used for? Excavation supplies, food, travel, a porta-potty at the site, botanical analysis, faunal analysis, artifact bags, archival equipment, chronometric analysis, and curation of artifacts.

What do you get in return?
-A color, bound copies of final site report
-Pictures, videos, and updates from my work at the site and of artifact analysis
-If you come to Boulder, a chance to view and handle artifacts from the site in person
-If you're in New Mexico, tours of the site while I work there this summer
-My utmost thanks, and mention in any publications about my research at the site

My goal is to raise $3,000 to help complete my research this summer. Every amount helps! Each dollar will go a long way in helping me and my site crew have a successful and rewarding experience at Woodrow Ruin. The final product of this research will be my published dissertation.

If you are interested in what it's like to work as an archaeologist in the desert in the American southwest, I'll be keeping a blog while I work at the site this summer and updating it daily. Here you can get a feel for the day-to-day experiences we have in the field, as well as a sneak peak into our exciting discoveries:
