EXPEDITION 360 WEST

The quest to become the first person to sail around the world and visit every country on the planet.

For the past 13 years, Capt. Ryan Langley has been on an epic challenge which only a handful of people have ever attempted: to visit every sovereign nation on the planet. But his journey does not end there, in fact he plans to do what has never been done before: to visit every sovereign country and to sail around the world in the process. Not only has no one ever accomplished the feat, no one has even attempted it. Along the way, he’ll sail over 40,000 nautical miles of open ocean, float the Nile River, trek to Mt. Everest, cross the Sahara Desert, view the bright lights of Dubai, and so much more. 360°West will be an expedition like no other - a journey to the far reaches of the planet, connecting people around the world through promoting sustainability, innovation and peace in every nation on earth.

This gofund me page is to raise funds for the first stage of the expedition, an overland journey through the countries Ryan has yet to visit in Central America: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Once this leg is complete, Ryan will have been to every country in North America and will be ready to set his sights on the next goal, South America.

Since the age of 11, when he traveled with his family from Washington State to Tierra del Fuego and back, Ryan Langley has been venturing beyond the ordinary to the farthest reaches of the globe. Two years later, he crewed on a whale research vessel in SE Alaska, and by the age of 17 had completed his training for his US Coast Guard Master’s Captain License, becoming one of the youngest people ever to accomplish the feat. He went on to deliver sailing yachts all over the world, making ten trans-Pacific voyages, including two solo. Now, at the age of 24, he has lived or worked in 23 countries, and sailed over 40,000 nautical miles at sea. But the greatest journey yet is just beginning.

Over two thirds of the earth is covered in water, and most of the world’s countries have some kind of coastline on the ocean. To date, everyone who has traveled to all of the sovereign nations of the world have used highly polluting modes of transportation, primarily jets. When Ryan embarks on his quest to visit every country in the world, he will be using the oldest, most proven, and greenest mode of efficient long distance transport in the world: the sailboat. In addition to enabling environmentally friendly travel on a scale never attempted before, traveling primarily by sailboat will dramatically cut the accommodation and travel costs of the expedition, provide a secure home to live in the most remote corners of the globe, and provide a perfect platform for experimentation in sustainability and scientific research. It will also make it possible for all kinds of aspiring adventurers to directly participate in the expedition by crewing on a segment of the journey. Of course, it won’t be possible or practical to visit every country by sailboat, but by getting as close as possible by boat, the environmental impacts of traveling to those nations will be dramatically reduced.

Capt. Ryan Langley is also highly involved with volunteer projects around the world. Immediately after the devastating impacts of Typhoon Haiyan in November of 2013, Capt. Ryan Langley went to the disaster zone in the Philippines to assist with the rebuilding efforts through All Hands Volunteers. The following December he volunteered with the same organization helping assist with flooding relief in Detroit. He has been involved with various orphanages around the world including spending two months volunteering at Roslin Orphanage in Indonesia, and he used his writing skills to cover the ongoing effects of the genocide in Timor Leste. During the 360 West expedition, Ryan will continue to serve the communities along his travels through volunteering with humanitarian, disaster relief and environmental efforts, as well as covering the war zones that he visits through writing. And of course one of the primary goals of the expedition is to promote peace and prosperity around the world by gathering support for the BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network) to empower individuals to fight poverty worldwide.

Since Ryan is currently in Central America on the expedition, donations will immediately be put to use to support the journey. This adventure is only possible because of the generous support of our donors and sponsors, and it is hoped that you can participate in the journey in some shape or form. Every donation is greatly appreciated no matter the amount.
