Help me get to San Diego

Donation protected
"My name is Kay Clopton, and I am a PhD student in Comparative Studies at the Ohio State University. I have been given an amazing opportunity to present a paper at the Comics Arts Conference in San Diego (and yes, it is part of Comic-con!). However, I need to raise money to be able to get there. The money I raise will allow me to pay for airfare, food, lodging, and transportation. This conference is my opportunity to do an initial presentation of my proposed dissertation topic: the study of sound effects in Japanese manga and American comics. The money will be put to good use, and allow this graduate student to have one less expense to worry about this summer. Every little bit helps!

Thank you for your support.

Note: The website for the conference will eventually contain the conference panel information, so please check it often for more details. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any and all questions.

Update: Here is my abstract. This is what I will be presenting at the conference, and I am more than willing to answer any and all questions.

The seeming abundance of women's comics in the form of graphic literature and Japanese manga demonstrate that there is a significant female comic reading audience in the U.S.. While there are many factors that go into why that has emerged, the purpose of this project is to tackle an aspect of comics "“ sound "“ to analyze how speech, sound, and emotive effects feed into the reading experience of these comics. With much of the attention of comics studies directed in other areas, taking on sound as a point of analysis will fill in gaps in understanding comics' appeal through the reading experience. Taking examples such as (but not limited to) MariNaomi's "Kiss and Tell", Alison Bechdel's "Fun Home", and Yoshizumi Wataru's "Cappuccino", this project will explain how sound's visceral impact dovetails with the images and text of graphic literature to create a reading experience that is enriched by all of the elements that come together in these works.

Update: For those who are curious about my work, check out this interview.

Update: Here is the budgetary breakdown so that people can see where the needs are for this trip:

Housing: $310 to stay in the dormitory for three nights (and this fee includes an insurance fee as well as $90/day room and board).
Flight: $779 round trip (as of 7/10/13) assuming that the return flight does not raise the rate (which it always does on Priceline; if you can recommend something else that will be more affordable, I would appreciate it).
Food and transportation: $225. I will be taking public transportation and buying groceries once I know what I'll have in my accommodations.
This leaves $86 for incidentals and overages.

I would like to thank everyone who has either made a donation or has passed along the message to their friends. I would have nothing at all without you.
