Drought! Save Hwange wildlife

Crisis in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park - Home to Cecil the Lion’s cubs

My name is Nicki Dell and I grew up in Zimbabwe (although I now live in Seattle).

Hwange National Park (home to Cecil the Lion’s  cubs) is Zimbabwe’s largest wildlife preserve and is experiencing a serious drought.

The park is home to countless wild animals and birds, many of them endangered. The land on which the park lies is dry and has no permanent surface water. This lack of water makes it unsuitable for farming, which is why we humans have allowed it to become a national park. However, the lack of water also means that the wildlife often does not have enough water to survive the dry season (June-November). Essentially, humans are forcing the wildlife to live in an area of land that cannot naturally sustain life. When droughts occur, like the one happening right now, hundreds of animals suffer and die.

My parents (Dave and Paula Dell) help to run a trust based in Zimbabwe called Friends of Hwange (http://friendsofhwange.org/), which was established in 2005 in response to a severe drought that resulted in the death of many animals due to lack of food and water. To keep the animals alive, we pump underground water into surface pans so that the birds and animals can drink. Just $10 keeps an entire waterhole alive for another day!

In an effort to go green, we have recently installed 7 new solar pumping systems around the park (and we plan to install more as funding allows!) However, due to the ugency of the current crisis we also need to run diesel engines to pump water at a further 10 pans 24/7, each of which uses 200 litres (44 gallons) of diesel every nine days. To keep the animals alive, we need to continue pumping until the rains arrive in mid-November. Every donation will be used to purchase diesel in Hwange that will keep the pumps operating throughout the dry season. I will personally transfer all of the money raised directly to Friends of Hwange in Zimbabwe.

Donate now to keep the animals alive and ensure the preservation of our priceless wildlife for future generations. Feel free to contact me, Dave Dell, or Friends of Hwange directly if you have questions or if would like to learn more about our work.
