Crossing For A Cause

My name is Neil. I'm 36 years old. I love my family, the outdoors and have a passion for cooking. I also live with type 1 diabetes, coeliac disease and Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, a triad of autoimmune related diseases. Type 1 diabetes in particular, though manageable with regular insulin injections, diet and exercise, is a chronic illness. There is no cure and it can be life threatening. After having lived and struggled with the disease for 17 years, I decided to embark on a dietary change that completely changed my life. I decided tp manage my disease using a low carbohydrate approach, similar to the one found in Dr Bernstein's book, 'The Diabetes Solution'. Although a significant lifestyle change, the results have been remarkable, drastically improving my overall diabetes control.
So why am I crowdfunding (something I've never even discovered until now)? Becuase I'm about to embark on one of the biggest challenges of my life and In approximately March 2018, I'm going to ride my bicycle across Australia, from Perth to Sydney, within a set time frame, to raise awareness for my disease, type 1 diabetes.
*You can follow my journey on Facebook - Crossing For A Cause - https://www.facebook.com/crossfort1/
**I am also aiming to fundraise for an essential cause - the Telethon Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre (TT1DFC) http://www.telethontype1.org.au/
Whilst many ultra endurance athletes will focus solely on their physical and mental preparation, I will in addition be focussed on managing my type 1 diabetes and in some of the toughest conditions on earth! I want to prove this is more than just a possibility, hope or dream, this is truly achievable, with or without having type 1 diabetes to accompany me on my journey. I'll show you how along the way.
Riding across Australia will not be an easy challenge. The journey itself is long, arduous and fraught with danger. It will test me on every level. Physically and mentally. So Ill need to be prepared in every way. But, by March 2018, I'll be as ready as I can be!
Besides riding, to make this happen, I will also need to fund this project and at this stage, funding will perhaps be one of the more significant hurdles. I not only need the equipment capable of getting me there, I need a support crew and with an added ambition to film this experience and make a documentary to share with a wider audience, funding will be my biggest challenge.
To make this happen I need your help and even a small pledge would make a massive difference, not only to my campaign, but to also raise the essential funds I aim to raise for the TT1DFC.
My promise to you - For each donation I receive initially, I will donate 50% towards the TT1DFC. The remaining 50% will be allocated towards the costs of completing the campaign itself. Prior to commencing the event in March 2018, I will donate all residual funds to the Telethon Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre and continue to actively raise more along the way.
My objective for this campaign, is to raise funds for the TT1DFC and although the campaign will require some funding, my aim will be to reduce costs wherever possible, with an emphasis on donating as much to the TT1DFC charity as possible. All costs associated with this campaign will be disclosed in full.
Ultimately, as I ride up to the steps of the Sydney opera house, I hope to have made a difference in encouraging others that theirs dreams can be fulfilled, with or without T1 diabetes. I hope to have raised awareness, and I hope to have raised as much funds as possible for the TT1DFC.
I would be forever grateful for any offering of support no matter how small or great, every donation will help and will change the lives of many.
I'll be sure to continue with regular updates along the way. Stay tuned!
