Help My Grandmother Reclaim Her Life
Donation protected
On August 1, 2009 my grandmother's life was changed forever. A man broke into her home, robbed and sexually assaulted her. I watched this once vibrant woman who laughed, embraced and loved life, enjoyed meeting new people and traveling ,and took pride in her appearance become withdrawn and depressed.
My grandmother raised four children alone having been widowed at age 24. She made sure each of her children were educated and then went to school herself to become a Cosmetologist. Granny has traveled quite a bit, going on cruises, trips with her church and attending cosmetology conventions. She has always been a sharp dresser and has been quick to remind me to "always put your best foot forward".
Since the break-in and sexual assault, she has given most of her dressy clothes, hats and shoes to charity. She is now usually found in sweat pants or jeans and t-shirt. She doesn't visit family and friends or go on trips. She makes sure that she is home before dark with everything locked and the alarm on. Her volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, sick and shut-ins and crocheting caps for preemies has stopped. I haven't seen a real smile or heard a true laugh pass her lips in all this time.
This July her attacker was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole. My grandmother has had to testify three times, aside from all the interviews and investigations. She finally has resolution and can begin to put the pieces of her life back together.
I'm the eldest granddaughter. My cousins and I would like to replace the couch where she was assaulted, so that there isn't a constant reminder sitting there in her living room. We'd also like to take her or send her on a vacation so that she can rejuvenate and begin to reclaim her life.
Anything you're willing to donate to help us achieve those goals will be welcome. We can't do this without support from wonderful people like you.
If you'd like an accounting of where your money is going, feel free to contact me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Our main goal is to replace her couches.
