Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues,
From December 6th through the 9th, Associação de Capoeira, Mestre Bimba and the Brazilian Center for Cultural Exchange of Sacramento - California, USA will host our second annual Capoeira Batizado in Berkeley, California! This event will provide an opportunity for our community youth to showcase their growth from months of hard work and dedication. We are looking for sponsors who are willing to help make this event a reality. The expected cost is $3,500. This estimate includes expenses such as: travel arrangements and housing accommodations for special guests, insurance and facility rental fees, catering, awards, and other miscellaneous costs. We hope that we can count on you to help us make this event our best one yet!
What is a batizado?
A batizado is a ceremony where new students are symbolically inducted into the worldwide Capoeira community. As in many aspects of Capoeira, the batizado has its own symbolism and is a very special event. Capoeiristas (people who play capoeira) from around the world and with varying levels of experience come together to teach and welcome students. In addition to receiving the first belt (corda), participants spend the weekend learning about music, dance, nutrition, and health in the many mini-workshops. The batizado is not a competition, but rather a special weeklong event filled with positive community activities, knowledge sharing, and appreciation of this beautiful art form.
Capoeira's Impact
Capoeira is an incredible and unique African-Brazilian art form that not only strengthens and unites the community, but also builds strong children—physically, mentally, and spiritually. For instance, while playing Capoeira, children learn to make their own decisions, both simple and complex. The practice allows them to develop empathy, while promoting healthy competitive instincts necessary in today’s society. The main goal as a teacher is to encourage and instill confidence into each student by way of this dance and martial art.
Thank you for your support!
