Help Machi fight Hypocalcaemia
Donation protected
In Greek "Machi" means battle. 32-year-old Machi, a phys-ed graduate and athlete from Greece, has been battling Hypocalcaemia for the past ten years.
It all started with routine surgery for her thyroid issue. Complications led to malfunction of her parathyroid glands, hypoparathyroidism ensued and eventually this led to hypocalcaemia. This illness means that her body has been completely drained from the necessary levels of calcium to maintain a healthy system. The chronic nature of her disorder was made her life very difficult, as she daily suffers from neuromuscular irritability and spasms (a condition known as tetany): Machi has extreme difficulty in walking and suffers from unbearable pain.
The outlook for her future is grim but a world-class neurosurgeon in Greece has offered her family hope in a pioneer technique that he is willing to apply to help her. The doctor will perform the operation free of charge but the family is in a dire financial situation from the accumulated costs of Machi's treatment and the financial crisis in the country makes dealing with illness even more difficult. They cannot afford the travelling, accommodation, sustenance and paramedical expenses entailed in relocating to Athens for at least 2 months while Machi will be fighting to regain her health and the active life a young woman and former athlete deserves.
Machi's family has requested that her photo is not included in the campaign, as they believe it would stress her even further: she is a proud young woman who does not like to complain and she is not aware of the fund-raising effort I - as a close friend of the family - am trying to launch. Instead I have uploaded a photo of the skyline at dawn on the island where we live: behind the clouds there is always the sun, and hope for a better future as long as people reach out to those in need.
Thank you to each and every one of you who has read this far about Machi's story. Your donations will be greatly appreciated. Don't hesitate to learn more about me if you have any doubts about the validity of the statements made herein. Have a Happy and Healthy New Year!
