PCOM, Medical Mission Trip to Nepal 2014

Donation protected
Hello and Namaste!

We are a group of medical students at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine - GA Campus and we are on a mission to raise money to open a free health clinic in a small village in Nepal and to provide basic health care to nearly 600 Nepalese for 2 weeks.

For those of you who do not know much about Nepal, it is a small landlocked country in Himalayas rich in scenic and cultural beauty. Although much of the healthcare in Asia has developed throughout the past 20 years, Nepal still falls behind many of its neighbors, lacking adequate healthcare infrastructures in many parts of the country. Currently there are only 2.1 physicians for every 10,000 people. While 80 percent of the country's population live in rural areas, 80 percent of those doctors work only in cities.

Hospitals and health facilities in the city sometimes lack basic supplies like soap, disinfectants, bandages, and gloves, which greatly diminish the quality of healthcare they can provide. These basic necessities are essential to stop preventable diseases like the common cold and the flu, food and water borne illnesses, and STDs which are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Nepal. Situations are much more desperate in smaller villages and communities outside of the cities where the only source of medical care for the entire community is a health post, a small medical center that lacks basic supplies and is often times run by volunteer workers from the village.

This Summer the GA-PCOM medical students and a small Nepalese medical team will be serving at a local health post in Jhor Mahankal, a village of approximately three thousand people, 13 km from Kathmandu. The medical students will assist the doctors in providing free primary care services like vaccinations, physicals, and assisting with other minor clinical procedures. Additionally the medical students will also provide basic public health education at local schools and in the community.

The donated funds will be used to cover the cost of running the health post facility, managing the medical team for 2 weeks, and collecting and transporting medical supplies. Although this is a large amount of money we are trying to raise, we believe every penny will help to provide these basic health needs to the village of Jhor. So please think about donating to this cause; even a small donation would greatly help us give back to the community what we are learning in school.
