Science Equipment for Kids!
My name is Michael Jean and I am
currently an adjunct lecturer for CUNY-CSI as well as a teacher and science lab
coordinator The Police Officer Rocco Laurie I.S 72. I have come to realize that
students are just not intrigued by the beauty of science and lack motivation. I
believe that if a program was to be implemented that emphasized theoretical
research, it will lead students to pursue careers in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
I am in the beginning phases of starting
such program at my current Junior High school. My ideas include, but are not
limited to: Drosophila mating to show genetic traits, bacterial growth and
identification on surfaces in the school, dissections of various animals (frogs,
fetal pigs, sheep heart, cow eye etc:), DNA extraction, Blood typing, and other
science labs.
There is one limitation to this program,
however, and that is materials. As you know, the DoE does not fund many of the
programs that are not labeled "˜necessities' to students. Students do not find
joy in these mundane topics found in everyday curriculum. Extension experiments
would be the key to grasp their attention.
I am writing this letter to simply ask
for any kind of donation that you would be able to contribute to the growth of
this program. Donations could be as small as pipettes to as large as an
autoclave. We could use any type of scientific equipment. All materials would
be greatly appreciated by the students, staff and me. It does not have to be
new, simply working would be perfect. William Bragg once said, "The
important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new
ways of thinking about them." It is with every cell in my body that I ask
for your assistance in our endeavor to create a more science friendly and
science orientated youth.
Here is a list of material that we would
like, but again ANYTHING would be appreciated.

behalf of the students and myself, I whole-heartedly thank you in advance for
your generous donations.
