Hi!
My name's Brittany. I'm 16 and from the Seattle area. I'm currently a junior in high school and do part-time Running Start at a local community college. The purpose of this page is help me raise money for a class trip to France in early July of 2014.
Growing up (or even now), did you ever had a dream to fulfill so immensely vivid you can't imagine it not happening some day? For me, that's the chance to visit and thoroughly experience France and its deeply rich and diverse culture.
I became entranced with the French language when I was about twelve, and am currently in my third year of studying French in school. Walking into French class is the highlight of my day because it challenges me and puts me with like-minded individuals who want to learn French. I attend my school's French club and love French music and films. During the summers of 2012 and 2013, I spent 2-3 weeks at a French-themed summer camp in the San Juan Islands of Washington. This coming summer, I plan on spending five weeks at the same camp as a volunteer assistant.
French is something I can't seem to get enough of. As I mature and learn more French, I want to put it to use in my future. I've contemplated a future career as an interpreter or French teacher, and while I don't know for sure what I want to do, I know it'll involve French. It's a beautiful language, and I want nothing more than to continue my education with it.
The trip I would love to go on spans the course of 10-12 days in mid-July 2014. The itinerary includes visiting Paris, Versailles, the chateaux in the Loire region of France, Carnac, Quimper, Mont St. Michel and the beaches of Normandy. We would primarily be visiting the region know as Bretagne (it's the French translation of Brittany!), a region I've long desired to visit.
Here's why I need your help.
The cost of the trip is about $4,000, and while my parents would be absolutely thrilled to send me to France, there is little room financially. My dad is an electrician, and was laid off is April of 2012. He returned to a Union electrician job in October of 2013, only to be laid off two weeks before Christmas. HUGE monthly bills include COBRA Health Insurance and college tuition payments for my brother. When I attended the French camp I mentioned earlier, I was only able to go because I received a (very) generous scholarship both years from the camp. For that I am eternally thankful and will forever cherish the amazing memories I created while at camp.
At 16, I have my first job working at a fast food restaurant. I've worked there since September of 2013 and am challenged on daily basis by my work. I enjoy interacting with my co-workers and customers. The only issue is that as a minor, I can only work 20 hours a week and because it's a fairly small establishment, all employees get very few hours. I have to pay $220 in bills for my own car insurance and gas every month. If I'm lucky, I'm able to put away around $150 per month towards my trip to France.
My family has so far saved about $2,100, but we need your help to make it all the way. We have to have 90% of the balance paid off in the next few months, or else we will lose all the money we've already invested in this trip.
I've never been out of the United States, and this very well might be my one shot to visit France for a long, long time (decades, really). It's all I can think about. This trip would be an extremely rich cultural opportunity I will likely never have the chance to fulfill again in my lifetime. I hope you can help me! Every single penny counts, and I will be eternally grateful for anything you can spare. This is my biggest dream, and I hope it'll come true.
Pouvez-vous m'aider? Voyager en France, c'est une grande rêve pour moi.
Thank you! (Merci beaucoup!)
