Northeast Himalayas in India: Socio-cultural Context of Indigenous People's Health. (Agra, India; Arunachal Pradesh, India; Delhi, India)
May 7-28, 2014
I have been granted an amazing opportunity to travel abroad to India with faculty and students within my Masters of Social Work program this summer. I will be traveling to India to work with the indigenous people for 3 weeks! I will be earning 6 credit hours for the 3 weeks abroad and will gain such an incredible amount of experience and knowledge from this rare opportunity.
We will mainly be visiting Arunachal Pradesh, popularly known as "Land of the Rising Sun" which is nestled in the mighty Himalayas. Surrounded by Tibet and China, Bhutan, and Myanmar, Arunachal Pradesh enjoys rich cultural and religious influences. It is home to 26 major tribes, each with its own unique customs, traditions, languages, and dresses.
During this experiential journey, we will visit the city of Delhi, a variety of community agencies, embark upon the adventures of northeast Himalayas and find ourselves immersed in an indigenous context. We will also visit the Dibrugarh University in northeastern state of Assam and tea gardens. We will then travel to Arunachal Pradesh to visit and engage with projects of USF's partner organization called the Research Institute of Worlds Ancient Traditions, Cultures and Heritage (RIWATCH). The RIWATCH has been recognized by the United Nations as a Regional Center of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development. In addition, we will visit breathtaking historical sites, monasteries, National Parks, and participate in local festivals and traditions. This journey will culminate with a visit to the beautiful Taj Mahal in Agra.
With every great opportunity also come costs. I am looking for any and all assistance anyone would like to contribute to this educational experience for me. I know this is a lot to ask but I cannot express the amount of gratitude I would feel for even a $5-$10 donation. Every little bit counts!
