Who are Black Geographers?
Black Geographers CIC consists of a team of 9 incredibly dedicated volunteers. Our CEO, Francisca Rockey, founded the organisation in April 2020 as a result of her frustration at the under-representation of Black people in geography and geoscience. She created Black Geographers not only to tackle the erasure of Black people from geography, but also to provide a space for Black geographers, geoscientists, and environmentalists to connect, network, and uplift each other.
Since Black Geographers was formed, our reach and presence have grown exponentially; both on social media and in academic spaces. We not only publish weekly educational content on our social media, but also facilitated the process of pairing young Black geographers with mentors, carried out crucial research, and developed our outreach work into schools across the country. Our most significant achievement to date was working in partnership with ESRI UK - a leading GIS software company - to develop scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate Black and mixed heritage students!
What is #7in1000?
From our first published research report, we discovered that in 2018, there were only 10 Black geography professors across the UK. This means:
How can we expect Black people to pursue geography and geosciences in further and higher education when they don’t see themselves represented? It's way past time for a chance.
This Black History Month, we’re setting ourselves a challenge - to flip 7 in 1000 and get 1000 people to donate £7 to Black Geographers! But to achieve this goal, we need your help.
£7 could support the costs of compiling exciting content for our topic weeks.
£70 could fund the costs associated with linking mentors to young Black students.
£700 could fund the delivery of an entire outreach programme to a school.
And £7000 could fund our entire running costs for the year, covering key costs like our website, tuition costs, and training for our staff. With £7000, we could put our full focus into extending our support for Black people and their increasing representation in all of Geography.
This Black History Month, don't just think about the Black leaders of the past, donate to Black Geographers and help us empower the leaders of the future.
From all of us at BG,
Thank you.
