The Facing History School is a small school located in the Park West Campus at 525 West 50th Street. My school is a public school in New York City with a student body composed of solely underrepresented communities, including predominantly Latino and African and American students. 100% of students receive free lunch which means many live at or below the poverty level. My school encourages students to look at events in history as a basis for making decisions in our lives. We learn to identify and stop injustices and to be upstanders, not bystanders. Throughout our four years at the Facing History School, we have become a family not only with our friends but teachers. Our school may not always have the best resources, but our teachers are dedicated to helping us to succeed.
All seniors are currently working on a social justice project to be displayed in April. We all chose an injustice that we have seen in our communities or care about, researched the issue, and are in the process of producing a creative media piece to display as a call to action. This program is called Choosing to Participate and it is an event attended and celebrated by the entire school community. The Facing History School has taught us to stand up and speak out when we see an injustice.
As a culmination of all of our hard work these last four years, the Class of 2014 has been hoping to hold a senior trip in the spring. For the last two years, the seniors at our school have not been able to attend a senior trip because of financial difficulties. This is something we wish to avoid. We need your help to make this memorable trip happen. Due to budget constraints, funding for our trip has been little to none. Our class has held some fund raising events but did not raise as much revenue as we had hoped. As graduation draws near, our time is running out and faith is dwindling. Our students come from low income families who simply cannot afford to pay to send their children on a trip.
Our goal is to send every single senior on the trip to close their high school experience. Your kindness and generosity is greatly appreciated. Please help us to bring our dream to fruition by donating to our senior trip so that the Class of 2014 can celebrate and revel in the community that we have built together and will leave behind when we graduate.
Thank You.
