UPDATE 6/8/14: Northwest Detention Center Resistance
This campaign continues to move forward, and has already seen success.
* We have received lots of media attention, and contributed to the shift in the dialogue on deportation and detention nationally.
*In May 2014, Representative Adam Smith introduced federal legislation to improve conditions at immigration detention facilities, following a meeting with activists, immigration lawyers and ICE officials in Tacoma, WA.
* On June 14, 2014 we will hold a Peoples Movement Assembly, stengthening connections between activists and organizers regionally, and connecting with organizers working on this issue internationally, in Spain and Canada.
We continue to maintain a weekly presence outside the detention center, provide legal support for detainees and hunger strikers, organizing and support meetings with families of detainees, and actively speak about and promote this campaign to end deportations. We are continuing to raise funds for these efforts.
Your donation will help fund:
-paying for gas cards and phone service for former detainees and families of detainees who are actively involved in the campaign;
-childcare and food at meetings with families of detainees; and
-legal support for hunger strikers who are continuing to experience retaliation and consequences for their courageous actions.

Background information:
The Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma, WA is one of the largest immigration prisons in the country, and currently holds approximately 1300 immigrants. Many held at the NWDC have lived in the US for years, in some cases for the majority of their lives. Few legal protections apply to these civil detainees, and those held are not entitled to an attorney at government expense; approximately 90% of them move forward in their cases unrepresented. The NWDC is operated by GEO Group, the second-larges private prison operator in the US.
On Friday, March 7, 2014, approximately 1200 immigrants held at the Northwest Detention Center began refusing meals. The hunger strike continued for 56 days, with strikers demanding improved detention conditions and an end to deportations.
Hunger strikers specifically demanded improvements in food, treatment by guards, medical treatment, and pay for the work done by detainees; lower commissary prices and telephone service; expedited processing of cases; affordable and consistent bond amounts; and an end to all deportations.
The hunger strikers’ demands can be realistically achieved through the end of the detention bed quota, the creation of enforceable detention standards, including fair wages for their work, and the expansion of deferred action.
