Omega Phi Chi 5th Annual Penny Drive
Donation protected
We are Omega Phi Chi Sorority, Inc. and we are a non-profit organization consisting of women leaders who dedicate ourselves to our community. We are from Rutgers University - Newark which is our Nu Chapter. Currently we are in search of the community's support as we prepare to execute our 5th annual Penny Drive & counting party for our chief philanthropy- Children & AIDS. We work closely with the AIDS Resource Foundation for Children towards a common goal. Each of our chapter sisters complete community service for at least two hours per week at the Academy Street Firehouse's afterschool program here in Newark, New Jersey. We mentor the children that attend this afterschool program who are each affected by AIDS in some way "“ if not directly, then indirectly. Each April we increase the amount of funds we aim to raise for these children. In 2010 our goal was $700, and last year our goal was $3,000. April is an imperative month for our chapter because each sister commits themselves to making every effort to raise as much funds as possible. Because this cause is so near and dear to our hearts, every year we exceed our goal. Every day we raise money by tabling in the Rutgers Newark campus center as well as in other buildings on our college campus. We also host large-scale money collections through other means and usually come up with different creative ideas each year. Whether it is by word of mouth or through major advertisement -- sisters can be seen throughout campus as well as the community working hard to spread awareness about AIDS. As a chapter, we table to collect money, especially coins, while we also sell handcrafted red chocolate ribbon lollipops, and handmade red ribbon pins. We also hand out pamphlets to increase awareness, and stop to talk to any person that may have questions. Our philosophy is that "every penny counts" so if all someone has is pocket change, we are sure it all adds up in the end to truly make a difference.
APRIL 2010 - $700.00 +
APRIL 2011 - $1,000.00 +
APRIL 2012 - $2,000.00 +
APRIL 2013 - $3,000.00 +
APRIL 2014 - _______?????????
This month-long effort also consists of hosting educational programs to help spread the knowledge of AIDS and this cruel disease affects our community. With that being said, on the very last day of April, we conclude our hard work by hosting an annual Counting Party. At this counting party we pour out all the change we've collected for our supporters and participants so they can assist us in counting all we raised through a fun, social experience. The treasurer of our chapter, along with other sisters, add everything up and we present the grand total to everyone who attended. We then follow this by celebrating our hard work, our supporter's support, and what we raised. To accomplish our goal, WE WILL NEED YOUR HELP!!!
We are asking for donations and your support so we can have another successful April! Any contribution will be greatly appreciated! Remember, every penny counts! We are also selling t shirts where all proceeds will go towards the AIDS Resource Foundation for Children. These funds are put towards scholarships for students who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS so they can move onto higher education. These students are often the students we mentor at the Academy Street Firehouse and seeing them have their dreams come true is extremely humbling. We aim to see the students of Newark see their dreams come true. Our efforts and hard work only pay off when we see smiles on their faces and watching them move one step closer towards their dreams.
Thank you for your contributions and we also thank you for joining us in this great cause. On behalf of Omega Phi Chi Sorority, Inc. - Nu Chapter (Rutgers University Newark) and the AIDS Resource Foundation for Children, we thank you again!
