Public library urgently needs new air-conditioning system
The Harrison branch of the Community Library of Allegheny Valley, in Natrona Heights, PA, is in dire need of a new air-conditioning system this summer. The new system to replace the 18-year-old unit that broke down beyond repair last year will cost approximately $15,000.
Summer temperatures in the area generally reach the mid-80s but in recent years have entered stretches in the lower- to mid-90s, and many local residents seek out the library as a place to wait out the hottest part of the day. The library also hosts exceptionally popular Summer Reading clubs for all ages: babies, preschoolers, school-age children, young adults and adults.
The two branches of the 91-year-old Community Library of Allegheny Valley serve six communities approximately 25 miles north of Pittsburgh. Of the approximately 26,000 people in CLAV’s service area, approximately 10% are over the age of 75. In addition, almost 28% of our households earn less than $25,000 a year; nearly 13% are below poverty level, and two of our six communities -- Tarentum and Brackenridge -- have been designated “economically distressed.”
Despite tough economic conditions, the library has established itself as a community treasure devoted to lifelong learning.
Every $100 we receive in sponsorships equals 1° degree in A/C a month for all members of the community who utilize the library for their needs.
