HAVEN - Helping Animals Via Emergency Intervention

My family and I are animal rescuers, and we try to do it with the least amount of BS possible. Often this is because we're the last chance for the animals we take in; our rescues are day-of-the-euthanization, two-steps-from-the-slaughter-plant missions.

Our efforts focus on cats and horses. We pull cats from death row at Hamilton Animal Control; HAC is the highest-volume high-kill shelter in Ontario, with almost 50% of its incoming strays being euthanized within a week. Since HAC isn't open to the public for adoption, the cats rely on other rescues to pull them out. Our latest rescue, Moka, is a 12-year-old tabby who was two days away from a scheduled euthanization; he was malnourished, dehydrated, suffering from bladder crystals, and had gum disease so bad that most of his teeth had fallen out. He's a brave little trooper, but he'll need to be on special food for the rest of his life.

Last year, we also began the process of rescuing horses from meat auctions. Unlike our southern neighbours, Canada doesn't ban the slaughter of horses for meat. Not only is the slaughter process inhumane, but it's incredibly poorly-regulated and unsafe for human consumers; our first rescue, Locke, had numerous veterinary-grade drugs in his system at the time we bought him from the Ontario Livestock Exchange. Locke is currently in training to become a hunter/jumper pony.

We don't rehome; our rescues stay with us until their last day on Earth, because after such difficult lives, they deserve to know that their home is forever. This page is set up so we can always keep it that way.

Help an animal find their HAVEN.

--OPTIONAL REWARDS (if that's what you're into!)--

$10: (Canada only) I'll blend you a custom mix of loose-leaf tea based on whatever you like, and ship it out! (Sample-size; makes about 7-10 cups of tea.)

$15: (Canada only) We have a huge garden and some very impressive pumpkin/squash breeds! 20 seeds of any variety you'd like.

$20: (Canada only) Same as above, but with a full-size tea mix! Makes approximately 20 cups of tea, more if you use less leaves.

$35: (Canada only) MULTIPLE blends of tea! Opt for either two full blends, four sample blends, or some random mixture of small packets that'll get you approximately 40 cups of tea.

$35: (Anywhere) Organic, homemade concord grape jelly! (DELICIOUS.) Grapes were grown in our backyard and hand-preserved. Approximately 150mL.

$38: (Anywhere) Organic, homemade green relish; plain, only cucumbers and flavour additives. Seriously awesome stuff. Approximately 300mL.

$40: (Anywhere) Other preserves, all organic and home-grown! We have semi-hot picked banana peppers, pickled beets, and preserved skinned roma tomatoes (great for making homemade sauce). Approximately 500mL.

$40: (Mac students) If it's a subject I can actually feasibly take notes in, and doesn't conflict with my own class schedule, I'll sit in on a class and take notes for you! You'll also get an MP3 recording of the lecture.
