FCCLA Nationals Mackinzie Roberts

    Hello I'm Mackinzie Roberts and I am a junior at Rogers High School in Puyallup Washington where I am a member of FCCLA (Family Career Community Leaders of America).

    Each year the members in FCCLA have the opportunity to create a project that will help benefit the community and compete with their project in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events.

    This year I am participating in the Recycle and Redesign category of STAR Events. In participating in this category, with the help of my friends and family, I have managed to create a ball gown completely crocheted from plastic grocery bags. My dress also consisted of aluminum pop cans, cotton shoelaces, and card board which is very important to recycle because as cardboard products decompose they create a methane gas with a global warming capacity 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Overall, My project took a total of 81 hours to make, used 993 bags and overall saved over a million years of decomposing garbage in landfills.

    It was definitely a challenge, but the end product was worth it and I have enjoyed the opportunities I have gotten to wear my dress to events. I have won gold for my project at the regional and state levels and have qualified to take my project to the national competition in San Antonio Texas this summer.
   
    I am excited for this opportunity and ask for your support to help take my project to the national competition in July, so that I may further spread the message that recycling should be a priority to everyone and that it is something easy all of us can do.
