Cure for Cancer in Cusco

Donation protected
Nilda is a member of our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Elder Rhoades and I (Sister Rhoades) met her here in Cusco, Peru.  We are serving as full-time Self-Reliance missionaries and her bishop asked us to help her.  Self-Reliance means our goal is to help the people here in Cusco improve their standard of living.

When we met Nilda, we learned that she was a single mom with four young children.  The oldest 14 and the youngest just a toddler.  She has a special needs child, a girl, 5 years old, that is autistic.  She is a single mom because her husband had recently abandoned her.

When we met her, Nilda had just opened up her own business to try to support her and her children - a laundry service - but she had no experience running a business.  She does have experience selling clothing on Saturdays at a flea market but that doesn´t generate enough income to support a family of 5.

We began to work with her.  We soon learned that Nilda was a hard worker and had a natural knack for business.  She just needed a bit of guidance and support.  We were impressed with how little she complained about her situation.  She applied herself and her business began to improve.  She developed a clientele and things were looking better for her.

Then we got busy serving in other areas and we didn´t see Nilda for a very long time.  Recently, we had a chance to hook up with her again and found out why we hadn´t heard or seen from her for so long.

Nilda had been in and out of the hospital.  She wasn´t feeling well and the doctors had run tests and had diagnosed her with uterine cancer and currently are determining which stage her cancer has advanced to, but most likely she has stage 2 or 3 cancer.

She is no longer able to work her business like before due to her frail health and she has been told not to lift heavy loads.  Her neighbors and ward members are helping as much as they can, but Nilda lives in the poorest neighborhood in Cusco.  Her friends and neighbors have very limited resources.

They have hired a girl to help her part-time with her business which costs 400 soles per month (approx. $135 US).  Nilda will need help paying for her medical treatment and medications, along with help for the families daily living expenses.

We want to keep our covenant to "bear one another´s buerdens, that they may be light; ...and comfort those that stand in need of comfort"  Mosiah 18:8-9.
We know that so many of our family members and friends sing in church the words - "Because I have been given much I too must give..." and it would be so easy for them to help provide the finances Nilda needs.

With very little sacrifice on our part, we believe we can raise this goal which will go a long way in  helping Nilda and her family as they face this daunting health challenge.  Nilda is worried about the future for her children and scared about her survival chances.  We would love to ease her worries and help her be more optimistic.  Please help us!
