Anyone can suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest, even small children or teenagers. The major risk factor for sudden cardiac arrest is coronary heart disease. Other risks factors include previous heart attack, arrhythmia or family history. However, while there are many factors that can increase the chance of SCA, in many cases it strikes without warning.
An Automated Electronic Defibrillator functions by diagnosing the victim’s heart rhythm and if necessary, delivering an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm.
As a scuba diving instructor, having an AED on dive sites will be incredibly valuable in the event of the need for advanced medical intervention. Through the years, I've trained many in Basic Life Support, CPR & First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries. However, an AED has always been priced out of range for me. As technology has improved and the cost to manufacture has declined, an opportunity to invest in one has arrived. With your help, acquiring an AED will complement all the other tools at my disposal to manage the risks involved with scuba diving.
My goals also include adding an extra set of pads for children and acquire and AED simulator to incorporate it's training during the courses I provide. Safety has always been paramount to me and the addition of an AED will extend my abilities to reach a greater population and provide even a greater level of care if the need ever arises.
A donation of any size will be greatly appreciated and will continue to reflect upon my ongoing dedication to the promotion of safe diving practices and the highest level of scuba and technical diving education.
