We are Headed to Nationals!

This year Andrews Middle School participated in the National History Day competition for the first time ever.  This is a competition in which students are given a theme and asked to research any topic within the theme and create a project.

Dyanna Holloway and Joy Wood created a website for their project "Sojourner Truth: Standing Up for Gender and Race Equality."  Only 12 sixth graders competed at the regional competition out of 174 participants.  Joy and Dyanna were the only sixth graders from the WNC regional competition to make it to the State Competition in Raleigh, NC.   Over 300 students competed at the State level, and only 19 were sixth graders.  Through hard work and dedication, these two ladies placed FIRST in their category and have been invited to represent North Carolina at the National Competition in June.

This is an exciting opportunity for them, but an expensive one as well.  The competition is a weeklong event at the University of Maryland.  The students, their families, and their teacher will need to stay in hotel for the entire week, as well as pay for gas, food, and parking while there.  We really hope that our friends, family, and community will support us in every way possible as we head to Nationals with such an incredible opportunity!
