Adera's Fund
Donation protected
This is Adera. She is five years old. Adera suffers from hydrocephalus, a build-up of fluid in the brain, which can lead to extreme enlargement of the head in infants, progressive brain damage, and eventually, as the child grows older, death.
In developing countries like Uganda, hydrocephalus is commonly caused by neonatal infection. The condition is routinely corrected in many parts of the world with a simple operation and post-surgery monitoring, but in Uganda that level of care is severely limited, resulting in thousands of preventable deaths from the disease every year.
Because she wasn't able to have surgery as a baby, Adera's condition has worsened and her health and welfare are now hugely compromised. BUT - all is not lost for Adera, or the many other children like her. There is a hospital in Uganda, run by CURE , which carries out neurosurgery on babies and children with hydrocephalus.
First, Adera would need to be assessed by specialists from CURE. Then, if surgery was considered appropriate for her, she would have to travel to the other side of the country to the hospital for her operation. The assessment costs just £11 and the surgery would cost around £213. A total of only £224 to save a child’s life and turn around her prospects.
There are two other children with hydrocephalus in the same district as Adera and we would like to send all three for assessment by CURE’s team. This would cost just £33 and would be a first step to getting the treatment they so desperately need. If they were considered for surgery then we would look to raise enough money for all three to be treated, but first we must get them assessed.
Please consider donating to help Adera and the other children get their assessment. Even a small amount would be of huge help and could save a child’s life.
Thank you from Adera, her family, and the Amatsiko community.
