Adriana Boss' Medical Bills

Tell my story, but where to begin?

I guess the best place is to explain why I am creating this.

On Sunday, July 24th 2016, my daughter Adriana was crossing the road on her skate board. She states that she did not see a car, that she looked. According to investigators Adriana and the vehicle collided. Adriana went up on the hood, throwing out her hand to brace herself hitting the windshield shattering the glass. Adriana's body went up the windshield the left side of her face slamming into the car at the top of the windshield, crushing her jaw. She then went off the side of the car, tearing off the passenger side mirror and landed on the pavement. It is estimated that the vehicle was going between 40-45 mph.  The driver did not stop...  the driver did not check to see if Adriana was still alive. It kept going, leaving behind a child battered, bruised, broken, but thankfully alive.   The driver claims that they thought they hit an animal. What kind of 5'4" tall, 115 pound "animal" did she think she hit that we have roaming around in Port Orange? The police state that someone wsa looking out for Adriana, because if shee had struck even a millisecond before, or after she did, that she would have been killed.

Her right arm was broken in several places, the jagged ends of bone piercing through her skin, the two bones in the lower part of her left leg were broken in several places, to include the top of her fibula where the ligament that supports her knee attaches, and her knee was fractured. The ligaments in her knee are severly damaged and must be reconstructed if they can't be repaired. The lower part off her jaw was broken in several pieces on the right side and crushed on the left. Her eardrum is ruptured and she is unable to hear out of her left ear.  When I first saw he in the Emergency Room, The girl that I have watched play ball for most of her life had been overwhelming traumatized, her face bloodied and swollen, but the determination in her eyes never faded, The first words she said to me were "don't cry mommy, I'm ok, I'm really ok."
This picture shows Adriana as she usually looks, compared to how she looked when she came into the ER. That was only four days ago, although it seems like a lifetime.

She has undergone surgery on her arm and now has a cast from mid upper arm to her wrist. In a surgery that lasted five hours, the right side of her jawbone was repaired and the left side reconstructed to the best of the plastic surgeon's ability. She will need several additional procedures to completely repair the lower half of her jaw. She will have her jaw wired shut for at least the next four weeks. Her bottom lip was repaired, where it was almost severed off completely.  Today she will undergo another surgery on her leg to repair the fractures, reattach the top of her fibula, and in which the surgeon will try his best to repair the ligaments in her knee. If a repair is not possible, due to the extensive damage to the tissue, then at a later date she will have another surgery to reconstruct the ligaments. She will also need dental implants after the jaw is healed enough to attach them to, because right now there isn't enough bone in her left jaw to support implants.

There is insurance that will pick up some of the medical expenses, but not all of them. Some of the procedures that are needed to repair her jaw are considered to be "cosmetic" and an unneccesary elective procedure. The driver that hit her has no insurance. Also, since Adriana was not in the crosswalk, the driver can't be charged with hitting her, only leaving the scene.

I remember Adriana's 1st grade teacher told me that trying to make Adriana do something that she did not want to do, was like swallowing peanut butter while standing on your head. That is a pretty accurate description. Adriana is a force of nature. If you tell her she is unable to do something, it only makes her more determined to prove you wrong,  After what recently happened to her, I am counting on that strength and determination to get her through.

Adriana is a 16 year old, soon to be Jr. at Atlantic High School in Port Orange, Florida. She is enrolled in honors classes (even though she pushes the line often with rules) and a proud member of the Atlantic High School Lady Sharks Varsity Softball team. The softball field is where she belongs and has played for over 10 years. She would rather steal than eat...  bases that is.  Adriana had dreams of playing throughout her high school years, then perhaps in college where she had intention of majoring in either the medical field or crimminal justice.

Since the accident we have been so incredibly fortunate to have hundreds of people to offer help, check on how she is doing, and pray for quick healing and relief from her pain.  We appreciate all of that more than we can express. If you can, please help me put my daughter back together again.

I received a notice the other day, that if every person who visits the campaign were to have given $5 - $10 that it would have reached goal. That is amazing.  If you can, anything will help. If you can't then thank you for reading, please pray for Adriana and share her story.
