Help Alana Save Baby Sea Lions

Donation protected
I am incredibly blessed to have Alana as a daughter. She is an absolutely amazing girl. She has a love for helping others that is truly remarkable. She wants to save EVERYONE and EVERYTHING, but she really does put her money where her mouth is. I can't count the times she has given all of her hard earned money to help out a cause she finds dear to her heart.  She loves with every ounce of her being and holds nothing back. She is one of the most generous people I have ever met and constantly humbles me with her selfless love, kind spirit, and empathetic nature.

Today, she so desperately wanted to have a "sale" to raise money for her most recent cause - the baby sea lions being abandoned in record numbers on the West Coast (presumably because the rise in water temperatures have pushed the prey base too far off the coast for mothers to adequately find food and nurse their young). She sat outside for more than 6 hours and was ecstatic because she raised $22.50 for the sea lions. She came inside and exclaimed, "Do you know how much fish that can buy!" She told me how happy she was to see how others were being so supportive. She said that she really felt she, "helped make the world a little better today."  I couldn't agree more. One of my primary goals as a parent is to raise children who do just that, and today, my heart could not have been more proud!

I am setting up this gofundme because I want to show Alana what a huge difference she can make. I want her to recognize that she may be young, but her love for others can help her do big things. Please consider giving $1 or $5 to help support Alana's cause. Even if you normally wouldn't support sea lion rescue, consider supporting to help teach an an almost 9-year old how much of a difference one person or a group of people can make. I can promise you, this lesson will resonate so deeply with her and you will be investing in someone who really will spend her life making this world a better place.

All donations she receives will go to directly support Marine Mammal Rescue. As an endangered species biologist, this too makes me very proud!

Thank you for your support and please share this with all of your friends.

The backstory
Last month, my sister was in the hospital in a very serious battle with bacterial meningitis. I had flown out to CA from my home in the DC area to be with her. After nearly two weeks at the hospital with her (in a room overlooking the beautiful ocean), one of her beautiful friends came to the room and kicked me out. She had a picnic bag for me and said, "Go! Make your feet touch sand!" The ocean is a haven for me and I was grateful for a few hours of sunshine and ocean breeze.

Just as I was about to leave, three young boys came running up and told me they thought there was a trapped baby sea lion on the jetty. I ran out to investigate and while she wasn't trapped, she was abandoned. I called Marine Mammal Rescue but they were unable to get her that day. There are record numbers of babies being abandoned and not enough volunteers or resources to save them all. I had to get back to the hospital, but couldn't stop thinking about the baby sea lion. A few days later, my niece and I came back to check on her. She was in rough shape. We stayed with her until animal control was able to come and take her to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (http://www.pacificmmc.org/). When I came home and showed Alana the pictures of this sweet baby, she was heart-broken. She thought of the "sale" all on her own and truly wants to help. The money she raises will go towards the rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals.
