My best friend Coney and his wife retired a few years ago. He and Lani considered buying a Winnebago and traveling around America (not really).
Instead they laid down their lives for the "least of these". After working hard all of their lives to prepare for the day when they could finally rest and put up their feet a bit... instead, they hit the ground running.
Moved to Kenya, took over a home for boys, began a mission to help widows, and I don't thing they've ever been happier. That Winnebago would have been a death trap. Now, they have Life and Life More Abundant.
They retired like Jesus would. They've never been busier, never been more physically, mentally, financially and spiritually stretched, but guess what...
They're having the time of their lives and they are making a difference. They are making this world a better place, once child at a time, one widow at a time.
Maybe you can't travel and go and stand at ground zero, I understand. I'm a man of a certain age and I'm trying to figure out how to raise an 8 year old and a 13 year old.
There is one thing I can do though, I can be a part of everything they are doing each time I bow my head. If I can skip a meal and send a few dollars... that meal I skip will feed a widow for a week in Kenya.
According to God, that's religion pure and undefiled. Don't allow your relationship with God to be lived vicariously through a Bishop, a Vicar or the man on TV with the golden ring and dazzling smile.
