The 1st Global Conference on Defending Dalit Rights
"Establishing Justice, Dignity, Equality, and Humanity”
#DalitGlobalConference
The Global Conference Organizing Committee (GCOC), with technical and management support of the International Commission for Dalit Rights (ICDR). is organizing a three-day Global Conference on Defending Dalit Rights entitled "Establishing Justice, Dignity, Equality, and Humanity”, from March 19-21, 2015, on the campus of Trinity Washington University in NE Washington, D.C.
From the Sanskrit word 'dalita', Dalit literally means "oppressed." The objectives of the Global Conference are to help achieve the full potential of the Dalit ('untouchable') population, strengthen the Dalit Rights Movement, and advocate for the passage of a binding resolution by the U.S. Congress to curb caste-based discrimination in the U.S. and globally. This is a high-level event to show solidarity and support for the nearly 260 million caste-affected, marginalized Dalits across the world.
Dalits have been victimized, discriminated against in social, political, economic, education and religious areas of life, and excluded from mainstream development on the basis of their caste or work and descent. This discrimination is widely practiced in South Asia, parts of Africa, and many parts of the world, including Diaspora communities.
The Global Conference is organized around five thematic areas: a) Binding Legislation Condemning Caste-based and All Forms of Discrimination; b) International Mechanisms and Obligations Against Caste-based Discrimination and Inequality; c) Best Practices and Challenges: Empowering Dalit Civil Society; d) Caste Freedom Index (CFI): Universal Measurement and Advocacy Framework; and, e) Gender Equality and Empowerment of Dalit Women.
ICDR conceived an idea for (and the GCOC endorsed) a global conference to be scheduled to coincide with the UN-observed "International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination" (March 21). Building on the accomplishments and positive feedback from the Global March against Caste-based Discrimination in D.C. (2014), the Global Conference will provide an opportunity for leaders from more than 200 civil society, NGOs, and governmental organizations around the world to develop solutions to challenges faced by Dalit men and women. Conference attendees will also have an opportunity to become effective advocates on reducing caste-based discrimination and promoting democratic development.
The ICDR and member organizations of the GCOC have contributed for costs that are being (will be) used for logistic, human resources, management, and publicity purposes. We still require $5,000 to $10,000 from outside sources to cover conference costs, mainly for accommodation of 30 speakers and the conference venue fees.
We would like to invite you, your friends and/or organization to participate in the conference and support this unique, first-time global event. We would greatly appreciate your donations, presence, solidarity, publicity, and coverage.
