Dress the World

Dress the World project is aimed at helping orphans around the world by providing them clothing from the United States.

We are students at Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) collaborating with Wilbraham & Monson Academy (WMA). We have collected clothes from WMA and shipped them to Lithuania to an orphanage in a city called Lentvaris.

Living in the U.S. we are one of the most privileged individuals in the world, therefore we feel that we have an obligation to help those who are deprived from comfort in life. We also believe in investing into school-age children, especially orphans. These young people need first and foremost love, care, and only after that education. However, we also cannot omit physiological needs such as housing, food, clothing… Love and care is provided by their teachers, counselors, we cannot do it directly. Spending time in orphanages as visitors is only harming them, because it encourages the existence of such places. The government provides education through public school systems, as well as housing (some orphans are supported privately), but not many consider clothing when there are so many other concerns to take care of. In our situation - being students in the U.S. we have access to excess clothing, thus we have decided to do what we can and provide at least some minimal comfort to those children. In orphanages kids can be wearing the same clothes for more than a month, and quality of it is usually poor. Here, in the U.S. we have so much clothing that we throw away, therefore Dress the World has decided to “recycle” those clothes and use them for the best cause possible.

The shipping costs are $1.49/lb and we were able to receive a $.10 discount, however we also have to pay $20/box for shipping fees. This year’s total expense is $600. We were able to raise $400 from previous fundraisers, but we are short on $200, thus we are asking you to help us and the Lithuanian orphans out, please. Every cent counts and is important. Thank you very much!
