No Barriers Summit - Overcome video.
Hey there,
My name is Jack I am 22 years old from Ireland. Three years ago this summer I had a freak accident in which I broke my neck doing something I did everyday as a lifeguard, running down the beach and diving into the water. I survived the accident, but I am now a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down with limited use of my arms and hands. I have not allowed and will not allow this to stand in the way of me leading the fullest life I possibly can.
I have overcome so many challenges, defying the odds, (See my TEDx Talk ) but this summer I plan to take on the biggest challenge yet and take on the trip of a lifetime along the West Coast of the United States. I plan to take on some extreme physical challenges and document my entire trip, the highs and lows, positive experiences as well as the inevitable struggles my injury will place in my way. My dream is to reach the No Barriers Summit in Utah, a conference of like minded and abled people, with extreme disabilities of all kinds, who are defying the perceived limitations of them, every single day by choosing to live within the realm of possibilities.
As much as I want to I cannot do it alone. I am still a student and there are many extraordinary costs associated with my care. I will share my journey with a good friend who has helped me through thick and thin, but I will also need the support of a specialized aid. We want to inspire as many people as possible who have faced extreme injury and adversity, by reaching them through broadcast and social media. We intend to demonstrate that the only limitations are those we place ourselves.
I would ask you to contribute in any way you can. Please find the breakdown of the costs associated with bringing this story to life. RTE (the national public broadcaster in Ireland) have donated many of the costs, the camera and sound person is donating his time. Please consider helping us make this dream a reality, in whatever way you can. No gift is too small and we hope together we can make a difference.
Thank you!
