Nursing Student Needs Help

Donation protected
Hello Friends,

My name is Jelea Nicoll.  I'm a pre-nursing student at Oregon State University (OSU) and am also attending Chemeketa Community College at the same time.  I am 19 years old, and I am just completing my Associate of General Studies Degree.  I am also finishing up my prenursing coursework at OSU but may continue on to finish a major in Psychology.  That degree will bridge to Linfield College where I can finish a few more courses and receive my Bachelor of Nursing Science (BSN), which is becoming a requirement for Registered Nurses (RN) in 2017.

During the past few years, I have spent all my college savings on college tuition and books.  As any college student (or parent) knows, higher education is very expensive, especially for those kids who have single parents who work because they often do not get the financial assistance that other kids get.  My mom has paid a large sum of money and continues to make large payments to support me during my college years.  She is also making monthly payments already on my student loans to decrease them as I finish school.

Because higher education is so expensive, I need your help and support.  I have always wanted to be in a career where I could help other people, especially those who are sick or injured.  I come from a family who have careers and do volunteer work to help others.  It is a lifestyle for us and part of who I am.   There are a few other reasons why I am motivated to become a nurse and I will share those with you now.

Because I suffered a serious injury when I was only 15 years old, I have had the opportunity to be in the care of nurses a lot the past few years.  My story is a rare one - here is what happened.  Sitting down on a school trip to eat dinner, my left femur bone spontaneously shattered (completely broke in half).

I had no idea I had a problem with my femur bone until that day.  After being transported to the hospital, xrays showed tumors and cysts that had aggressively grown inside my femur bone and caused it to spontaneously shatter in half.  I have had several surgeries and ongoing expensive medical tests after that initial break occurred.  It was months before I could walk again, and to this day, I have a limp because of it.  But one thing I learned during this medical ordeal:  nurses make a huge difference.  Just like the nurses up at the hospital helped me, I want to help others in that way too, and make a difference in the lives of people who need help with difficult situations.

Another motivator for me, although very sad, is something that happened a few months after my leg shattered.  I lost my only sibling - my older brother.  He was 22 years old. His death was unexpected, and after just going through my leg break and finding tumors in my bones, it seemed pretty harsh.  It was the most difficult thing I've ever been through.  It is still difficult today, but I keep moving forward toward my goal of nursing, even though his death made it so much harder.

I know that when I finally become a nurse, my brother (if he were still here) would be very proud of me.  I have accomplished a lot since those very hard things happened a few years ago.

Any donation you could make would mean the world to me. If a lot of people gave just $15 or $20 (or more, if they could afford to), I would reach my goal.  Another way to help is if you happen to know of any scholarships.  I have even been looking for scholarships for kids with red hair (believe it or not, they exist).  If you know of any scholarships that are not as well-known or companies that support kids like me, please tell me about them.  If you want to help in that way, my mailing address is:  PO Box 3612, Salem, OR 97302.   Someone can spend many hours every day looking for a scholarships they qualify for and find nothing (which is the case lately with me).

Finally, it would help to share this donation page with others so that lots of people can see it.

Thank you so much for your help.  I know that there are many people who help others and I really appreciate any assistance you can give me at this time.   It means the world to me to have your support.
