Surgery for Kitten Kane
Donation protected
In April 2014, we found 2 kittens abandoned by their mother in our back yard. One of them was found to have a broken jaw after being attacked by a hawk. We lovingly took both the kittens, hoping to find homes that would adopt them. We knew that taking 2 week old kittens with injuries to the shelter would be a death sentence. At first we just called them "broke-jaw" and "the runt" as to not get attached. But after fostering them we determined that with "broke jaw's" special needs, and the comfort they get from one another we should keep them together. So, we welcomed them to the family. Their names are Kane (for her warrior spirit) and Olive (that was just a good name). Runt sister Olive has grown fairly normally, though still on the small side. On top of the jaw injury, our little kitter-mite barely weighs 3 pounds at 7 months old. Her jaw's growth plate was impacted and this has created some severe complications, including a drastic malocclusion (misalignment). Her vet suggests it's time for surgery to correct her jaw so she can eat properly, and regain function. We fear that without the surgery her jaw will continue to grow normal on one side, while the other remains stagnant, causing a twisting effect to the bone and teeth. This isn't just a deformity but a challenge for her to eat and play. Her tongue often gets stuck on her teeth which results a bloody, painful mess. Since Kane can't close her mouth she is prone to lots of drooling. This also makes playing hard because she is unable to bite down on toys, wrestle with her sister, or eat treats. Kane eats by drinking a slurry of kitten food and water from an oral syringe. As many challenges as this brings, Kane is an upbeat, sweet kitten with a purr like a locomotive and a love for everybody around her. We would hope to raise enough money for her surgery to repair her damaged jaw.

This was Kane's first night in our care. Yes, that is blood under her nose. This image was taken while on our way to the emergancy vet. It was a very scary night for all of us.
