LGC 4-H Camp Disc Golf Basket

Here at Lindley G. Cook 4-H Camp, we have two principle goals when it comes to our facility. The first is to keep our classic, rustic summer camp the same as it’s been for over 65 years, and exactly how all our campers remember it. The second is to find ways to improve this facility in the future to continue to offer the highest quality in our Camp programs.
It is with this in mind we are embarking on the “Camp Course Disc Golf Project.” Disc Golf is a rapidly growing sport that anyone can play. The concept is the same as traditional golf, only instead of clubs and a ball, a flying disc is used (a variation of a classic Frisbee) to navigate the course. The goal is to land the disc in a target basket with as few throws as possible. Instead of huge manicured fairways, disc golf courses utilize fields, wooded areas, and all kinds of natural terrain. This makes it a perfect fit for the L.G. Cook facility.
Not only does Disc Golf fit in perfect with the terrain of Camp, but it matches our mission just as well. It is a fun and active way to enjoy the outdoors and each hole demands that the player appreciate and pay attention to the land the course uses. The competition is simply the player against the course, and there is tremendous bonding opportunity for the group playing together. Players enjoy together a game with shared strategy, individual challenges, and a great and fun way to interact with and enjoy the Camp environment.
Our goal is to design and install, in phases, a full 18 hole course. The course will start by weaving through Camp central, and then trace the property line through the forest, around the lake, and back to the middle of Camp. Playing the full course would be the equivalent to a several mile walk through some beautiful and underutilized forested sections of Camp. It will be a new and creative way for campers to recreate on the hundred and eight acres of woods that make up Camp proper. A Disc Golf class will be included in our Summer Camp curriculum, and it can be used during Rec Times and by individual cabins as well. It would also be open to our existing rental groups, as well as a draw for those interested in the sport for future rentals.
Camp is working closely with Jay Roosa of the Skylands Flying Disc Club, who is spearheading course design and implementation, as well as helping with fundraising efforts. In addition this project is receiving support and sponsorship from both the Education Disc Golf Experience (EDGE) and the Youth Voice: Youth Choice program, funded by National 4-H Council and the Walmart Foundation.
This particular fundraiser is for one of the DiscCatcher baskets. If we generate enough interest in this one and the funds are raised quickly, we will certainly open up another fundraiser for more opportunities to donate to this great project. As an added bonus, if you donate you can suggest a name for this basket via the the comment section. Once we have all of the funds and suggestions, we will hold a vote via the camp's blog to pick a winning name.
If you are interested in donating your time, we will be having a work day in the spring to help with ground work on our course. Please contact our office for information on that. We thank you in advance for any proceeds or service you can contribute.
