Leia's Lung Cancer

Donation protected
On Saturday March 21st, Casey noticed that Leia was refusing to eat food, even after begging for it. That following Monday we took her into the vet. She was happy, talkative, rubbing her face all over us, climbing on shoulders and introducing herself to everyone who approached. The vet expressed amazement at how young Leia looked and acted at almost 16. She thought she'd be seeing a very sick cat.

The vet checked Leia out with all signs good, and we had her inspect further even though that would cost quite a bit on our limited income.

X-rays showed a huge amount of fluid in her chest and a mass on her lung. Leia has lung cancer.

The vet removed 4oz of fluid from her chest at a cost double the amount of the inital workup charge. This made Leia sore and quite unhappy. She ate at the vet, but vomited it up 12 hrs later and hasn't eaten on her own since. She's on 5 medications and climbing just to battle the nausea, pain, and keep the fluid at bay. Our happy cat that went in, came out depressed, spending most of the day in my work chair, getting up only to drink or to run to her box.

Today she seems better and is probably feeling a little less sore. She's been talking to us and purring. Still hates her brother Luke, as always.

This week we have to decide to see the oncologist and try chemo, or take a chance with steroids. The chemo could help her live another 6-10 months, the steroids could not work at all. If we attempt steroids then we cannot try chemo, as it nullifies the effects. Just to consult the oncologist is $240. The chemo pill will be about $100 per month, on top of the other meds.

I believe in doing the best for her that we can, until it is no longer feasible due to pain or condition of life. To do anything else feels disrespectful to the love and life she gives to us and which we should return. To have to make a decision against that due to our very limited means is heart wrenching. I also have always believed in doing everything you can to see to your bills, and to be very desperate before you ask for help. We are at that place now.

Leia's birthday is the same as mine, April 4th. If she can make it, she'll turn 16 with her brother. If you can help it would be appreciated beyond words we could express.

If you would prefer to instead support us through a purchase of art, that would also be so very helpful. You can buy prints and originals from Casey Blandford or Mirana Reveier here:
