Mike Scherr's Bucket List

With so many other horrible people in this world, why does it have to be the best man we have ever had in our lives?

The night my sister met Michael, her smile lit up the room. After their first date to go see the Lion King, all of her grinning from ear to ear was enough to make me barf. I look back now and wish I would have been the paparazzi that my friends accuse me of being today. Watching Katy and Mike love each other over the last 22 years has been moving to say the least. The way he tackles her in the kitchen for kisses or seeing the warmth in his eyes when he looks at her is enough to turn even this old grouch into a romantic.

A little bit about Mike. My brother in law, Michael Scherr, was born and raised in Hastings, Nebraska, graduating in 1992 before joining The United States Air Force in January 1993. He was a Nuclear Weapons Specialist, stationed at Fairchild when he met my sister Katy Crowe. He served in Washington, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Colorado before medically retiring in 2014 after his diagnosis, surgeries, and first cancer treatments. As a Nuclear Weapons Specialist, Mike was constantly working on and around nuclear weapons.

He is genuinely a great guy! He is straight forward, hardworking, honest and has been an amazing husband to my sister for almost 21 years. Some of my best memories with Mike are camping off a back road or eating at a greasy spoon. He has always made me appreciate and know what true love looks like. There are not a lot of men out there that could handle me as a sister-in-law, and he has taken it all in stride. He has been a tremendous father to their three children Stephen, 17, Madalyn, 15, and Samuel, 9. He has worked hard and provided for his family and I am hoping this fundraiser can help make some more great family memories for the five of them.

Michael was diagnosed with cancer (Acinic Cell Carcinoma) in October 2012. During a plethora of treatments such as three radiation treatments, an allergic reaction to main stream chemotherapy, two clinical trials, and currently a genome drug designed for breast cancer, he has battled it every day with grace, humor and a positive attitude. This terrorist started in a salivary gland but was also in lymph nodes. It then metastasized into his lungs and is currently attacking his liver and he has several more affected lymph nodes.

On March 9, 2016, we received this news from my sister:

“There is a new tumor on Mike’s liver. Not good. While the study medication seemed to be helping his current spots, they are stopping because of this new spot. He will be possibly starting an immunotherapy study at the end of the month or beginning of April. What he won't tell you is that he asked the Doctor how long. He thinks one to three years. Mike had a "feeling" of two years the other day. Prayers for a miracle appreciated.”

Then this on Monday, May 9, 2016:

“News from Mike's Doctor today. Since nothing he has given Mike has worked, he thinks the tumor near his intestine is causing the pain and has suggested a Celiac Plexus Block. He will be having a scan on Thursday in preparation for possibly getting this spot and his liver radiated. However, things do not look good. His Doctor doesn't like to answer the question of "how long" but today he said 6-12 months.”

I am hoping this fundraiser will help with some of Mike's Bucket List items – a goal of his to visit all 50 states (then possibly other continents). All he has left to visit are the Carolinas, Maine, Alaska and Hawaii. (If anyone has cheap/free accommodations in any of these states please let Katy know.)  A guided fishing trip for Mike and his boys and maybe a trip to Hawaii for the family, as well as some alternative treatments such as hyperbaric sessions and acupuncture are also on Katy’s wish list.

I know Mike has a lot of fight left in him because he has never given up on anything in his life. He will likely be upset with me for starting this campaign, because I don’t think he has ever asked for help in his life. He is always the man that offers to help anyone first, anything from helping someone move, fixing your car, or blowing out your sprinklers. Anything will help out, but even just your prayers for a miracle are enough.

Mike is the greatest man that I have ever met in my life and he and his family deserve these memories.

Our whole family is thankful for any donations. If you would prefer an alternative way to give, please message Katy or myself for their address.
