On Friday September 4th Matt brought Noah to see his pediatrician because he had been having some pain in his stomach, which was figured to be constipation. There had been a couple times before during the summer when he had shown this same discomfort. The pain seemed to go away after he would eventually have a bowel movement. Unfortunately this wasn't the case with the latest episode. Noah's pain seemed to be more intense and frequent leading up to some sleepless nights for him.
After the doctor had looked at him she decided it would be best to have some imaging done of his stomach. The fastest way to get these images done was to go through the ER. Matt then brought Noah to Lake Forest hospital for different tests such as blood, urine, X-ray, ultrasound. Everything was fine, until he came back with the results of the ultrasound. It didn't take long before he used the words mass and tumor. Matt had to face the unbelievable challenge of breaking the news to Maureen who is 35 weeks pregnant and having complications of her own. It was the determined at that point to take Noah to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee.
Later that evening after breaking the news to Maureen, getting Avery ready to go to her grandma's house and packing things up , they made their way to children's hospital. The reason for getting there that evening was to get Noah's pain under control so he could get some rest. Noah's 1st night there went pretty good until having to wake him up to drink a bottle of contrast dye for his CT scan later that morning. He wanted nothing to do with drinking that stuff so instead they had to run a tube through his nose into his stomach so they could pump the dye to his stomach. Noah received the scan and was back in his room a short time later.
Then came the waiting.....
A few hours later one of the oncologists returned and gave the results. Noah has a tumor that starts at his right kidney and crosses his abdomen and ends up towards his left kidney (but doesn't seem to be attached to his left kidney). Unfortunately as the tumor crosses his abdomen it is interfering with certain veins and other things as it crosses his abdomen.
Noah then went in for his biopsy and bone marrow aspiration. The procedures went well and Noah was able to rest after. The samples were sent out and tested and results should be in sometime soon. The surgeon that did the procedure said he was very confident that Noah has Neuroblastoma but couldn't say that 100%. Once those test results are complete the oncology team will put together a plan of what his treatments will be.
Noah has been incredible with what he has gone through these past few days and he will amaze everyone even more as each day passes. Maureen has also amazed all of us these past few days; being as much of a fighter for Noah and his future baby brother. The kids are lucky to have such a strong mother!
The Baker's have a long road ahead of them. Let us come together, friends and family, to support this amazingly brave family.
